Columbus, Ohio – Two individual wins highlighted the Ohio State women’s swimming and double-dual meet with Penn State and Indiana Friday and Saturday at the Bill and Mae McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. Nicole Maglich and Gulsah Gunenc each recorded an individual win during the two-day meet, but it was not enough as Penn State and Indiana each got past the Buckeyes.
Maglich’s win came in the 500-yard freestyle, while Gunenc’s occurred in the 200-yard butterfly. Both swimmers notched an NCAA “B” qualifying time with the victories and both have now accumulated seven consideration times this season. Penn State beat the Buckeyes 195-151, while Indiana won 199-151. Penn State defeated Indiana 197.50-152.50.
The 400-yard medley relay opened the meet Friday. The Ohio State team of Steph Fennell (Jr., Campbellville, Ontario/Milton District), Rebekah Rychvalsky (Jr., Sydney, Australia/Castle Hill), Gulsah Gunenc (Edirne, Turkey/Edirne Anatolian) and Elaine Chan (Fr., Hong Kong, China) swam the fastest of the Ohio State squads. The team recorded a time of 3:52.09. Penn State’s relay team won the event with a time of 3:41.78. In the 200-yard individual medley, Gunenc returned as the fastest Buckeye swimmer, hitting the wall in 2:07.68.
Maglich recorded her third NCAA “B” cut time this season in the 500-yard freestyle. The Scarlet and Gray captain and Penn State’s Nikki Collins were neck-and-neck the entire length of the race. Maglich managed to pull ahead in the last two laps, out-reaching Collins by two strokes. Her qualifying time was recorded at 4:51.08. Rychvalsky recorded a fourth-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke. Her time of 1:05.45 was only three-tenths of a second away from the season-best time. Fennell finished seventh in the 200-yard backstroke event, followed closely by Liz Osterer (Jr., Nepean, Ontario/Sir Robert Borden). Fennell and Osterer recorded the times of 2:07.64 and 2:11.57, respectively.
Chan finished in second in the 100-yard freestyle for the Buckeyes, narrowly missing the win by a little more than a second. Chan’s time also barely missed the NCAA “B” cut time – of which she already has two in the 50-yard freestyle – coming in at 52.10. Gunenc’s first-place finish came in the 200-yard butterfly. The Top 4 finishers were all within three-tenths of a second of each other and recorded NCAA “B” consideration times. Gunenc’s winning time was notched at 2:00.64.
In the diving well, Julie Broms, (Jr., Indianapolis, Ind/North Central), scored a 267.16 on the 3-meter springboard. The score earned her a fourth-place finish. She returned in the 1-meter to finish sixth with a score of 228.44.
Maglich returned the following day to place fourth in the 1,650-yard freestyle event with a time of 17:01.89. In the 50-yard freestyle event, Chan recorded one of the highest finishes for the Buckeyes on the second day of competition. She swam to a second-place finish, with a time of 23.68.
Fennell and Rychvalsky once again were the fastest Scarlet and Gray swimmers in the breaststroke and backstroke events. Fennell clocked a time of 1:01.12 in the 100-yard backstroke, while Rychvalsky hit the wall in 200-yard breaststroke in a time of 2:23.24. Both women finished seventh in their respected events.
Gunenc was the other Buckeye to finish second on Day 2. Penn State’s Amberle Biedermann barely out-reached Gunenc for the first-place finish. Gunenc recorded a time of 55.99. Maglich then finished seventh in the 200-yard freestyle, and Gunenc competed in the 400-yard individual medley and finished sixth. The Buckeyes finished the meet with a third-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay event.
“I was really happy with last night’s performance, but not so much with today’s,” Jeanne Fleck, Ohio State head coach, said. “We need to work on coming back for the next day. We did well last night, but we need to make sure we can do the same the following day. The Big Ten championships are right around the corner.”
Following a three-week break, the Buckeyes will play host to the 2006 Big Ten Championships, Feb. 15-18, at the Bill and Mae McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. Please visit ohiostatebuckeyes.com for a complete schedule and ticket information.
