Minnesota Defeats Ohio State Swimming and Diving, 184-114 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Nicole Maglich and Gulsah Gunenc each recorded an NCAA consideration times in the Buckeyes’ 184-114 loss to Minnesota Saturday in Minneapolis. Gunenc was the only double-event winner for Ohio State, while four other Buckeyes recorded first-place finishes at the meet. Gunenc and Maglich each have notched six NCAA “B” cut times this season.
Opening the meet with the 200-yard medley relay, the team of Elaine Chan (Fr., Hong Kong, China), Rebekah Rychvalsky (Jr., Sydney, Australia/Castle Hill), Gunenc a sophomore from Edirne, Turkey (Edirne Anatolian), and Linda Lund-Kristiansen (So., Roennede, Denmark/Haslev) finished third in the event, posting a time of 1:47.58. In the following event, the 1,000-yard freestyle, Buckeye swimmer Griet Buelens (So., Kapelle, Belgium/Ursulinen Mechelen) finished the event in third with a time of 10:11.56.
Steph Fennell (Jr., Campbellville, Ontario/Milton District) recorded a third-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke event. She hit the wall in 59.49. Nicole Maglich (Sr., Sarasota, Fla./Sarasota) swam to a second-place finish in her first event of the meet. Barely missing the NCAA “B” cut time by five-tenths of a second, she clocked a time of 1:50.86.
In the next two events, Ohio State had back-to-back winners. In the 100-yard breaststroke, Lund-Kristiansen returned for the Scarlet and Gray’s first individual event win of the meet. Out-reaching Erika Bjorklund of Minnesota, Lund-Kristiansen hit the wall in 1:06.15. Rychvalsky finished third with a time of 1:06.53. Gunenc won the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:01.00, which was roughly six seconds faster than the other competitors. It was Gunenc’s fourth NCAA “B” qualifying time in the event.
Chan finished second in the 50-yard freestyle in her first individual event of the meet. She turned in a time of 23.78 in the event, following Minnesota’s Stacy Busack who finished the event in 23.74. Following a break, Chan returned to claim the 100-yard freestyle. She out-touched Minnesota’s Sarah Perrott with a time of 51.69. Chan recorded the same time in the same event last week, and it remains the Buckeyes’ fastest time in the event this season.
The Buckeyes took the Top 2 spots in the 200-yard breaststroke. Rychvalsky swam a 2:21.44 to win the event. Whitney Hackman (Fr., Goshen, Ind./Northridge) was two-seconds behind her, finishing second with a time of 2:23.83. Rychvalsky’s time knocks two seconds off the season-best time for the Buckeyes. In the 200-yard backstroke, Fennell was the fastest competitor for the Buckeyes, recording a fourth-place time of 2:09.19.
Maglich returned in the 500-yard freestyle, in which she recorded her sixth NCAA “B” cut time this year. Her time of 4:53.97 placed her in third and gave her a second NCAA consideration time in the event. Gunenc’s second individual win of the night came in the 100-yard butterfly. She won the event after finishing with a time of 56.35. Gunenc returned following a break to finish second in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:08.68.
In the diving well, Julie Broms (Jr., Indianapolis, Ind./North Central), won the 1-meter springboard competition and finished in second on the three-meter. Her winning score on the 1-meter board was 263.85, while she lost by six points on the 3-meter board with a score of 269.33.
The team wrapped up the meet with a second-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The team of Chan, Buelens, Lund-Kristiansen and Maglich combined for a time of 3:30.59.
“I was happy with some of our swims,” Jeanne Fleck, Ohio State head coach, said. “Gulsah had a great meet and so did Linda. We still have a lot of work to do before Big Tens.”
The Buckeyes return to the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion for a two-day meet with Penn State and Indiana next Friday and Saturday at 6 p.m. and 10 a.m., respectively.
