Ohio State Women’s Swimming and Diving Races Past Ohio, 180-114 – Ohio State Buckeyes

Columbus, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s swimming and diving team won its second meet in as many days with a 180-114 win over Ohio University, Saturday. The Buckeyes won 13 of 16 events in the Bill and Mae McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion and swept the Top 2 spots in four individual events. Elaine Yu Ning Chan won two events during the meet, recording her second NCAA “B” cut time in the 50-yard freestyle in as many meets. Five Buckeyes had double-event wins.
Opening the meet with the 400-yard medley relay, the Buckeye relay team of Steph Fennell (Jr., Campbellville, Ontario/Milton District), Rebekah Rychvalsky (Jr., Sydney, Australia/Castle Hill), Gulsah Gunenc (Edirne, Turkey/Edirne Anatolian) and Yu Ning Chan, a freshman from Hong Kong, China, raced to a combined time of 3:50.63 to win the event. The time was a season best time for the Buckeyes.
In the first individual event of the meet, Nicole Maglich (Sr., Sarasota, Fla./Sarasota) won the 1,000-yard freestyle event. A lap ahead of the other competitors, Maglich recorded a time of 10:06.26 in the event. Liz Osterer (Jr., Nepean, Ontario/Sir Robert Borden) finished the event third with a time of 10:45.67.
In the following event, Griet Buelens (Fr., Kappelle, Belgium/Ursulinen Mechelen) won the 200-yard freestyle. Buelens, with her third win of the weekend, clocked a time of 1:51.16, three seconds faster then the second-place competitor. Linda Lund-Kristiansen (So., Roennede, Denmark/Haslev) raced to a third-place finish in the event, recording a time of 1:56.47. In the 100-yard backstroke event, the Buckeyes swam to a 2-3 finish. Maglich claimed the second-place spot after finishing the event in 58.75, six-tenths of a second away from Ohio’s Emily Wylam. Fennell was close behind Maglich, reaching the wall in 58.97. Rychvalsky was the fastest Buckeye in the 100-yard breaststroke. Recording a time of 1:06.63, she finished the event in second, barely out-touched by Karen Liddy of Ohio, who finished the event with a time of 1:06.55.
Buelens and Gunenc went 1-2 in the 200-yard butterfly, both finishing at least nine seconds ahead of the competition. For her second win of the meet, Buelens hit the wall in 2:01.77, while Gunenc finished the event in 2:03.35. Chan won her second 50-yard freestyle in as many meets after joining the Buckeyes at the beginning of winter quarter. Her time of 23.52 notched her second NCAA “B” qualifying time in the event. Lund-Kristiansen followed the event in second, clocking a time of 24.61.
Chan returned for her second win of the meet in the 100-yard freestyle event. She finished the four lengths of the pool in 51.69, a season-best time for the Buckeyes. In the 200-yard backstroke, Steph Fennell was the fastest Buckeye in the event. She recorded a time of 2:07.73 to finish the event in third. Osterer finished behind her with a time of 2:13.30.
In the next two events, the Buckeyes claimed the Top 2 finishes. In the 200-yard breaststroke, Rychvalsky earned top honors in the event with a time of 2:24.39. Finishing closely behind was Whitney Hackman (Fr., Goshen, Ind./Northridge), who recorded a 2:25.74 in the event. Next, Maglich and Buelens went 1-2 in the 500-yard freestyle. Maglich won the event with a time of 4:56.14, followed by Buelens in second with a time of 4:57.12.
Gunenc swam to her first win of the meet in the 100-yard butterfly. She recorded a winning time of 56.78. Lund-Kristiansen finished the event in third, hitting the wall in 59.22, followed by Courtney Brayman (Fr., Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) in fourth with a time of 1:00.59.
In the 400-yard individual medley, the Buckeyes finished the event with a sweep of the Top 3 spots. Gunenc claimed her second event of the meet with a time of 4:30.58. Samantha Johnson (So., Cleveland, Ohio/Hawken) and Fennell went second and third, respectively. Johnson touched the wall in 4:37.71, while Fennell stopped the clock at 4:38.60.
In the diving well, Julie Broms (Jr., Indianapolis, Ind./North Central), swept both the 1- and 3-meter springboard events for the second time in as many meets. She notched 253.95 points on the 1-meter board and 291.16 after six dives on the 3-meter board.
Wrapping up the meet with the 400-yard freestyle relay, the Buckeyes recorded a time of 3:30.97 for the win. The team consisted of Maglich, Buelens, Lund-Kristiansen and Chan.
“We swam pretty well,” Jeanne Fleck, Ohio State head coach, said. “It was a solid meet. Everyone was pretty solid and we did what we needed to do. We’re really looking forward to Big Ten’s. I’m very happy with Elaine (Yu Ning Chan). She has done really well.”
Next up, Ohio State will travel to the University of Minnesota next Saturday for a 1 p.m. meet.
