Ohio State Defeats Marshall 134-98, Record Three NCAA Times – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s swimming and diving team returned from its holiday break with a 134-98 win over the Marshall Thundering Herd, Friday. Winning 12 of 13 events in the Bill and Mae McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion, the Buckeyes had three double-event winners and four single-event winners. Nicole Maglich, Griet Buelens and Julie Broms each claimed two individual-events. The Scarlet and Gray also had three NCAA “B” cut times recorded at the meet.
The meet began with the 200-yard medley relay event. The Scarlet and Gray relay team of Steph Fennell (Jr., Campbellville, Ontario/Milton District), Rebekah Rychvalsky (Jr., Sydney, Australia/Castle Hill), Gulsah Gunenc (Edirne, Turkey/Edirne Anatolian) and Linda Lund-Kristiansen (So., Roennede, Denmark/Haslev) pooled their talents to place first in the event, recording a time of 1:46.93.
In the first individual event of the night, Buelens, a sophomore from Kapelle, Belgium (Ursulinen Mechelen), paced the 1,000-yard freestyle. Pulling two-pool lengths ahead of all other competitors at lap 33 (of 40), she won the event and clocked in a time of 10:05.47. Samantha Johnson (So., Cleveland, Ohio/Hawken) finished the event in third, clocking a time of 10:29.67, followed by Erin Greene (Sr., Crawfordville, Fla./Wakulla) in fourth with a time of 10:40.32.
Maglich, a senior from Sarasota, Fla. (Sarasota), clocked an NCAA “B” qualifying time in her first event of the meet, the 200-yard freestyle. She touched the wall in a time of 1:50.29 to win the event. Fennell followed suite, clocking a time of 1:56.48 for a second-place finish. In her first meet as a Buckeye, Elaine Yu Ning Chan (Fr., Hong Kong, China) opened her first individual event with a win and NCAA “B” consideration time. Finishing the two laps in 23.46, Chan also recorded the fastest time in the event for the Buckeyes so far this season. Erin Church (So., Morrow, Ohio/Ursuline Academy), Abby Johnston (Fr., Mount Vernon, Ohio/Mount Vernon) and Natalie Bojko (Sr., North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) finished 3-4-5 in the same event.
In the 200-yard individual medley, the Buckeyes posted a 2-3-4 finish, with Gunenc taking second. Gunenc recorded a time of 2:09.16 in the event. Rychvalsky was seconds behind with a 2:13.55 finish, followed by Liz Osterer (Jr., Nepean, Ontario/Sir Robert Borden) with a time of 2:14.04.
In the 200-yard butterfly, Buelens recorded an NCAA “B” qualifying time and her second individual win of the meet. She out-touched Milla Kuurto of Marshall by only half of a second to record the consideration time of 2:01.31. Gunenc finished in third with a time of 2:02.99
Lund-Kristiansen and Fennell each recorded an individual win during the meet in the 100-yard freestyle and 200-yard backstroke events, respectively. Lund-Kristiansen recorded a time of 53.22 in the freestyle event, while Fennell hit the wall in a time of 2:07.04.
Maglich raced to her second win of the night in the 500-yard freestyle event. She recorded a 4:57.92 in the event. Stasia von Rahl (Fr., Mishawka, Ind./St. Joseph’s) finished third in the event with a time of 5:17.96. In the 200-yard breaststroke event, the Scarlet and Gray claimed the Top 3 spots. Rychvalsky took first and clocked a time of 2:23.14, three seconds ahead of all the other competitors. Johnson followed in second with a time of 2:26.20. Whitney Hackman (Fr., Goshen, Ind./Northridge) finished third with a time of 2:27.02.
In the diving well, Broms, a junior from Indianapolis, Ind. (North Central), swept both the 1- and 3-meter springboard events. After six dives, she recorded 253.04 points on the 1-meter board, followed by the 3-meter board, in which she notched 290.85 points.
In the 200-yard freestyle relay, the Buckeyes closed out the meet with a win. The team of Chan, Buelens, Kristiansen and Maglich combined for a winning time of 1:35.41.
“We swam very well,” Jeanne Fleck, Ohio State head coach, said. “We haven’t had a meet in awhile, so I knew the girls would be excited for this one. There was only one event that I wasn’t happy with. Overall, we swam well.”
The Buckeyes return to the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion Saturday against Ohio University at noon.
