Buckeyes End Day One of Kentucky Fall Invitational – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s tennis team opened the 2005-06 season at the Kentucky Fall Invitational in Lexington, Ky., Friday. Junior Kristin Messmer, in Flight B, and freshman Julie Voss, in Flight C, led the Buckeyes by advancing to the semifinals in their respective singles flights. Three other Buckeyes – Julie Blackmore, Olga Koutseridi and Sara Kinning – recorded their first collegiate singles wins before falling in the quarterfinals.
Play continues through Sunday with both singles and doubles action.
In Flight B, Messmer (Lutherville, Md./McDonogh) opened the tournament with a win over Purdue’s Mallory Voelker in three sets. She downed Marisa Mechem of Denver in the quarterfinals.
In her first collegiate match, Voss (San Angelo, Texas/St. Stephen’s Academy) downed Jemma Euers of Eastern Kentucky in the Flight C Round of 16. After losing the first set, 6-3, Voss rebounded and did not allow Euers another game, winning both, 6-0. In the quarterfinals, Voss defeated Marshall’s Jessica Keever.
Freshman Julie Blackmore (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) also won her first match as a Buckeye in three sets, dowing Olga Batsula of East Tennessee State, 3-6, 6-1, 6-1, in Flight A. She fell to top-seeded Kim Coventry of host Kentucky, 6-0, 6-2, in the quarterfinals.
In Flight D, two Buckeyes posted wins in the Round of 16 before falling in the quarterfinals. Freshman Olga Koutseridi (Barcelona, Spain/Schiller International) won in three sets over Terin Roof of Eastern Kentucky, 6-7 (5), 6-1, 6-1. Redshirt-freshman Sara Kinning (r-Fr., Grand Blanc, Mich./Powers Catholic) beat Marshall’s Jessica Holland in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3, in her first match as a Buckeye. The Buckeyes posted one doubles victory in the Round of 16. Angela DiPastina (Titusville, N.J./Hun School of Princeton) and Messmer downed Ali Paradis and Molly Asel of Marshall to advance to the quarterfinals.
