Ohio State Softball Begins Fall Exhibition Season with 1-2 Mark at Kent State – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State averaged over six runs per game in its three contests Sunday, but the Buckeyes went 1-2 in their first game action of their fall schedule at the Kent State Fall Tournament. Ohio State topped Toledo, 10-3, in the opener before suffering losses to Pittsburgh, 5-4, and Kent State, 6-5.
The Buckeyes were coming off just their first week of practice, while their three opponents had all been in camp for two weeks and competed in tournaments last weekend.
“We showed a good capacity to come back, but in two of the games we couldn’t hold on to the comeback enough to win it,” Linda Kalafatis, Ohio State head coach, said. “We were down at least two runs in every game. Obviously we don’t want to be in that situation; we want to have the lead and be in control. Today certainly showed us the things we need to work on.”
Individual performances and statistics from Ohio State’s three games Sunday were not available.
Ohio State returns to practice Tuesday in preparation for the Fifth Annual Ohio Collegiate Charity Classic next weekend at OSU’s Fred Beekman Park. The event, one of the biggest fundraisers this year in Columbus for breast cancer research, will include 19 teams from around the state, with all proceeds from the event benefiting the Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research at the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute.
Ohio State will play four games in the tournament, including two Saturday and two Sunday. The tournament schedule and a Classic preview will be released Monday.
Their three games Sunday proved to be the tune-up Kalafatis wanted for the Buckeyes.
“We allowed a lot of base runners and gave up a lot of runs,” Kalafatis said. “And we need to shore up our defense. We’ve only had a week to be together, but we’re certainly expecting more.”
