COLUMBUS, Ohio – Playing two men down in the second overtime, the 16th-ranked Ohio State men’s soccer team saw host Bowling Green score the game-winning goal in the 106th minute to shock the Buckeyes, 3-2, in Bowling Green, Ohio, Friday. Ohio State (5-2-0), which had one goal disallowed by an inadvertent whistle and scored the equalizer already one man down, sees its four game winning streak snapped and falls to Bowling Green (1-5-1) for the first time in their last five meetings.
Ohio State seniors Kevin Nugent (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) and Kyle Veris (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville/Akron) both had a goal and an assist, but Bowling Green’s Ryan Perea (23:35) and Omari Aldridge (71:22) had already staked the Falcons to a two-goal lead, and BGSU’s Kyle Williams put away the game-winner in the 106th minute.
“We just didn’t come ready to play,” John Bluem, Ohio State head coach, said. “Bowling Green defended well and was good on the counter-attack and our guys just didn’t play with the discipline needed to win.”
Trailing 1-0 midway through the second half, OSU junior Taylor Korpieski (Westerville, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) was given his second yellow card of the match, resulting in a disqualification, and 20 seconds later the Falcons were up, 2-0, on the goal by Aldridge.
Nugent got Ohio State on the scoreboard first at the 77:12 mark with his third goal of the season, taking an assist from Veris. About two minutes later, Nugent sent a shot that slammed off the crossbar and came directly to Veris, who almost instantaneously sent the ball into the back of the net for what appeared to be the equalizer. However, in the split second that the ball caromed off the bar and to the foot of Veris, the official blew his whistle and thus waved off the goal. The inadvertent whistle resulted in a free kick for the Buckeyes, but the Falcons blocked the attempt.
Not long after that, Veris got another chance at tying the game and delivered again, this time at 83:04 off an assist from Nugent and freshman Danny Irizarry (Lawrenceville, Ga./Greater Atlanta Christian). The Buckeyes continued to press, but the Falcons, which snapped a 25-match winless streak with the victory, held Ohio State out of the goal through the end of regulation and through overtime.
Early in the second overtime, OSU sophomore Xavier Balc (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) was given his second yellow card of the match and was forced to leave the game, giving Bowling Green a two-man advantage. Six minutes into the second overtime, Williams’ unassisted goal ended the match.
“We knew this would be a scary match; Bowling Green had nothing to lose,” Bluem said. “By the time our guys started playing with intensity we were down 2-0. You can’t do that against any team and expect to win.”
Ohio State senior goalkeeper Ray Burse Jr. (Prospect, Ky./St. Xavier) had two saves and allowed just his third and fourth goals of the season.
Ohio State out-shot Bowling Green, 20-14, including 11-6 in the second half, but the Falcons took a 5-0 shot advantage in the two overtime periods. The Buckeyes had six corner kicks to just two for BGSU.
The Buckeyes make their return to Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium Sunday with a 2:30 match against Kentucky.
