COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 16th-ranked Ohio State (7-2) women’s volleyball team will begin Big Ten Conference action by hosting No. 19 Purdue (11-0) and Illinois (9-2) this weekend. The Buckeyes will face Purdue at 7 p.m., Friday in a match that will be carried by Comcast SportsNet Chicago on a delay basis. Dave Loane will call the match with former OSU All-American setter Audrey (DiPronio) Flaugh providing the color. OSU will host Illinois at 7 p.m. Saturday. Both matches will be played in St. John Arena. Last week Ohio State finished second in the Buckeye Classic defeating Pittsburgh 3-1 (30-19, 30-24, 31-33, 30-28) in the semifinals and losing 2-3 (30-19, 32-30, 24-30, 29-31, 10-15) to Brigham Young in the championship match.
A LOOK AT OHIO STATE
The Buckeyes are coached by Jim Stone, the 2004 Big Ten and the American Volleyball Coaches Association Mideast Region Coach of the Year. Ohio State is 7-2 on the season defeating Pittsburgh 3-1 and losing 2-3 to Brigham Young last weekend in the Buckeye Classic. Danielle Meyer (So., Cincinnati, Ohio) leads the Buckeyes in kills per game with a 5.38 per game average. Ami Stevens (So., Centerburg, Ohio) ranks second at 3.84. Meyer is the top percentage hitter at .316 with Stevens second at .284. Setter Marisa Main (Jr., Louisville, Ky.) has an 11.85 assist per game average. Ashley Kiel (Jr., Allenton, Wis.) has a team-high 17 ace serves (.50 per game) with Meyer second with 10 (.29). Defensively, Stevens has a team-high 3.44 digs per game average with Meyer second at 2.50. At the net, Meyer is averaging a team-leading .82 blocks per game with five solos and 23 assists. Nicole Britenriker (So., Cincinnati, Ohio) ranks second in blocking with a .71 average on three solos and 21 assists. A LOOK AT PURDUE
The 19th-ranked Boilermakers are coached by Dave Shondell. Purdue begins Big Ten play with a perfect 11-0 mark. Last weekend in their Mortar Board Premier Tournament the Boilermakers picked up 3-0 victories over Ohio (30-19, 30-23, 30-20), Xavier (30-25, 30-21, 30-25) and No. 16 Tennessee (30-26, 30-22, 30-26). Leah Wischmeier was named the Most Valuable Player of the Tournament with Samantha Mader and Kelli Miller named to the All-Tournament Team. Danita Merlau leads the team in kills per game with a 3.25 average. Mader ranks second at 3.03. Elizabeth Jacques is the team’s top percentage hitter at .395 with Mader second at .378. Setter Renata Dargan is averaging 13.53 assists for the Boilermakers. Brittany Dildine has a team-high 15 ace serves (.42) with Melanie Ukovich second with 14 (.41). Defensively, Anne Mastandrea has a team-high 5.22 digs per game average with Miller ranking second at 3.33. At the net, Stephanie Lynch leads the team with a 1.30 blocks per game average with seven solos and 36 assists. Ranking second is Jacques at 1.27 per game on six solos and 36 assists.
OHIO STATE-PURDUE SERIES
Ohio State leads the series with Purdue, 35-29. The Buckeyes have a three-match winning streak over the Boilermakers. In Columbus, OSU has won 16 times while losing nine. Purdue last won in St. John Arena, in 2003, a 3-1 (27-30, 30-24, 30-22, 30-20) Boilermaker victory. Last season Ohio State won 3-0 (30-23, 30-26, 30-24) in West Lafayette and 3-0 (36-34, 30-23, 30-28) in Columbus.
THE LAST TIME AGAINST PURDUE (Oct. 29, 2004)
Ohio State (20-1 overall, 10-1 Big Ten) women’s volleyball team, behind a 30-point performance by Stacey Gordon, defeated Purdue (11-10, 4-7), 3-0 (36-34, 30-23, 30-28) Friday night in St. John Arena. OSU’s Ami Stevens had 15 points and Danielle Meyer added 14.5 in the match. Purdue’s Kim McConaha had a team-high 14.5 points with Leah Wischmeier adding 13 and Samantha Mader 10 for the Boilermakers. Ohio State hit .375 for the match to .244 for Purdue. The Buckeyes had a 70-53 margin in kills while Purdue had a 3-2 advantage in ace serves. Each squad gave up five service errors. Ohio State had a 54-42 margin in digs with OSU’s Brittany Dahms recording a match-high 15. At the net, the Buckeyes had a seven to four advantage in team blocks. OSU’s Marisa Main recorded 54 assists in the match to 41 for Purdue’s Renata Dargan.
A LOOK AT ILLINOIS
The Illini are coached by Don Hardin. Illinois is 9-2 after finishing second in the Illini Classic last weekend. Illinois defeated Eastern Illinois, 3-2 (27-30, 30-19, 30-27, 27-30, 15-8) in the semifinals and lost 0-3 (26-30, 25-30, 30-32) to Rice in the Championship match. Vicki Brown and Meghan Macdonald were named to the All-Tournament Team of the Illini Classic. Leading Illinois in kills per game is Rachel VanMeter with a 6.13 kills per game average. Kayani Turner ranks second at 2.91. Vicki Brown is the top percentage hitter on the squad at .335 with Macdonald second at .311. Setter Stephanie Obermeier is averaging 12.94 assists for the Illini. Rasa Virsilaite has a team-high 15 ace serves (.41) with Jana Wojcik second with 13 (.32). Defensively, Beth Vrdsky leads the team in digs with a 4.50 average. Virsilaite ranks second at 2.14. At the net, Brown leads the team in blocks per game with a 1.02 average on seven solos and 34 assists. Ranking second is Macdonald at .75 per game with five solos and 25 assists.

Ohio State leads the series with Purdue, 30-27. In Columbus, the Buckeyes have won 13 matches to 10 for the Illini. OSU has won the last four meetings in St. John Arena. Last season, Illinois won 3-0 (30-26, 30-22, 30-24) in Champaign while the Buckeyes won, 3-2 (30-24, 29-31, 30-28, 27-30, 15-8) in Columbus.
THE LAST TIME AGAINST ILLINOIS (Nov. 19, 2004)
Ohio State, behind Stacey Gordon’s 35.5 points defeated Illinois, 3-2 (30-24, 29-31, 30-28, 27-30, 15-8) Friday night in St. John Arena. Gordon had a match-high 32 kills adding a solo and five assist blocks and collected a match-high 27 digs. OSU’s Ami Stevens contributed 17 points in the match with 14 kills, two ace serves and two assist blocks. For Illinois, Rachel VanMeter scored a team-high 24 points with 22 kills and two solo blocks. OSU hit .192 for the match to .126 for Illinois. The Buckeyes had a 78-57 advantage in kills while Illinois had a six to five margin in ace serves. Each squad had 10 service errors. OSU had a 70-49 margin in digs and had a 16.5 to 16 margin in team blocks. OSU’s Marisa Main recorded a career-high 68 assists in the match while Stephanie Obermeier had 53 for Illinois.
LAST WEEK AGAINST PITTSBURGH
No. 14 Ohio State team defeated Pittsburgh, 3-1 (30-19, 30-24, 31-33, 30-28) in the semifinals of the Buckeye Classic Friday night in St. John Arena. OSU’s Ami Stevens scored a match-high 20.5 points with Danielle Meyer adding 19.5. Stevens had a team-high 19 kills, an ace serve and an assist block and added 15 digs. Meyer had 16 kills, two aces and three assist blocks while adding 13 digs. Pittsburgh’s Diana Andreyko scored a team-high 20 points on 20 kills with Jessica Moses adding 12.5 points with 10 kills and five assist blocks.
Ohio State hit .196 for the match to .153 for Pittsburgh. The Buckeyes had a 70-53 advantage in kills and a six to three margin in ace serves. The Panthers gave up 10 service errors to six for OSU. Defensively Ohio State had a 71-65 edge in digs with Pittsburgh’s Megan McGrane collecting a match-high 28. At the net, the Panthers out blocked OSU, 13 to six with Allie Cherven posting a match-high seven total blocks with two solos and five assists. OSU setter Marisa Main recorded a match-high 54 assists with Pitt’s Nicole Taurence collecting 44.
After leading 2-0, Pittsburgh rallied to win game three, 33-31. The Panthers held the lead most of game four and were ahead, 28-26 when kills from Stevens and Nicole Britenriker tied the game at 28. After a Pittsburgh time out, back-to-back kills from Britenriker closed out the game at 30-28, giving the Buckeyes a 3-1 win.
LAST WEEK AGAINST BRIGHAM YOUNG
No. 14 Ohio State saw Brigham Young win the final three games of the Buckeye Classic championship match to earn a 3-2 (19-30, 30-32, 30-24, 31-29, 15-10) victory Saturday night in a match played at Centerburg High School in Centerburg, Ohio. Lindsy Hartsock scored a team-high 22 points for the Cougars with Chelsea Goodman adding 21.5 and Erica Lott, 21. Hartsock had 20 kills (.500), a solo block and two assist blocks for her points with Goodman collecting a team-high 21 kills and an assist block and Lott adding 19 kills, a solo block and an assist block. OSU’s Danielle Meyer scored a match-high 28 points for the Buckeyes with Ami Stevens adding 18.5. Meyer produced a match-high 28 kills (.377) in the match while Stevens had 17 kills, an ace serve and an assist block.
Brigham Young hit .310 for the match to .269 for the Buckeyes. OSU edged the Cougars, 82-81 in kills and 3-2 in ace serves. BYU gave up 12 service errors to five for the Buckeyes. Defensively, Brigham Young out dug OSU, 78-77, with BYU’s Lindsey Evans and OSU’s Stevens sharing match-high honors with 22 digs each. The Cougars had an eight-to-five advantage in team blocks with OSU’s Nicole Britenriker (recording a match-high four assist blocks. OSU setter Marisa Main recorded a season-high 68 assists in the match while BYU’s Amy Schlauder had 56.
OSU overcame a 30-29 BYU lead in game two with a Britenriker kill to tie the game at 30. A BYU error and an Ashley Kiel kill gave OSU a 32-30 win and a 2-0 lead in the match. Trailing 2-1, Brigham Young had a 29-25 lead in game three when the Buckeyes held off three game points and tied the game at 29 with an Amanda Miller kill. A Goodman kill and a Rachel Dyer solo block gave BYU a 31-29 game four win tying the match at two games each. BYU trailed 9-8 in game five but four consecutive point opened a 12-9 lead. A Meyer kill made it 12-10 but three Cougar points closed out the game at 15-10 for the BYU victory.
The Buckeye Classic All-Tournament team included Diana Andreyko (Pittsburgh), Carrie DeMange (Duke), Danielle Meyer (OSU), Ami Stevens (OSU), Lindsey Evans (BYU), Erica Lott (BYU) and Lindsy Hartsock (BYU) (tournament MVP).
MEYER RECORDS FIFTH 20+ KILL MATCH
Danielle Meyer recorded 28 kills against Brigham Young for her fifth 20-plus kill match this season. She hit .377 in the match adding 14 digs. Against Pittsburgh, she had 16 kills (.333) adding 13 digs, three assist blocks and two ace serves. For her efforts, Meyer was named to the Buckeye Classic All-Tournament Team. Meyer has had double-figure kills in eight matches this season including the last three and has four matches with double-figure digs including the last three. She has a 3.46 career kills per game average and ranks eighth on the OSU career list, is fifth in career attack percentage at .307 and ranks fifth in career blocks per game with a 1.04 per game average
STEVENS HAS 22 DIGS AGAINST BRIGHAM YOUNG
Ami Stevens had a season-high 22 digs Saturday against Brigham Young. Her previous best this season was 18 at Bowling Green. Stevens had 17 kills (.262), an ace serve and an assist block against the Cougars. Against Pittsburgh, she posted a team-high 19 kills (.196) adding 15 assists, an ace serve and an assist block. Stevens was named to the Buckeye Classic All-Tournament Team. She has had double-figure kills in her last five matches including a career-high 26 kills at Bowling Green and has had double-figure digs in her last three matches. Stevens ranks third in OSU career digs per game with a 3.09 average.
MAIN HAS A SEASON-HIGH 65 ASSISTS AGAINST BRIGHAM YOUNG
Marisa Main recorded a season-high 65 assists against Brigham Young last Saturday. Her previous best this season was 64 at Bowling Green. She added eight digs, six kills and an assist block against the Cougars. Against Pittsburgh, Main posted a season-high 15 digs against the Panthers, adding 54 assists, five kills and two assist blocks. The 15 digs was her third double-figure dig match of the season. Main produced a triple-double (14 kills, 54 assists, 14 digs) earlier this season at Cleveland State. She has 2,188 career kills and ranks seventh on the OSU career list and ranks first in career assists per game for OSU at 14.21.
KIEL EQUALS SEASON-HIGH 13 KILLS AGAINST BRIGHAM YOUNG
Ashley Kiel recorded 13 kills against Brigham Young to equal her season-high for the third time. She previously had 13 kills against Chicago State and at Bowling Green. Kiel added 15 digs, a solo block, an ace serve and four assists against the Cougars. She posted a season-high 16 digs against Pittsburgh adding nine kills and two ace serves. Kiel has had double-figure kills in four of her last five matches and double-figure digs in four matches this season, including her last three.
MILLER POSTS SEASON-HIGH HITTING PERCENTAGE AGAINST BRIGHAM YOUNG
Amanda Miller hit a season-high .348 against Brigham Young Saturday. Her previous best was .290 against Long Beach State. Miller collected nine kills, four digs, two assist blocks and three assists against the Cougars. Against Pittsburgh, Miller had eight kills, two assist blocks and an assist.
BRITENRIKER EQUALS CAREER-HIGH 13 KILLS AGAINST PITTSBURGH
Nicole Britenriker recorded 13 kills against Pittsburgh to equal her career-high set this season at Cleveland State. She hit a season-high .308 against the Panthers adding three digs, a solo block and two assist blocks. Against Brigham Young she equaled her career-high of four assist blocks, previously set against Iowa in 2004. Britenriker adding nine kills and three digs against the Cougars.
KASTEIN NEEDS ONE DIG TO TIE FOR 20TH IN OSU CAREER DIGS
Rebecca Kastein has 884 career digs and needs one to tie Katie Virtue (1999-02) for 20th on the OSU career digs list. She needs nine digs to tie Anne Botica (1998-01) for 19th with 893. Last week against Pittsburgh Kastein recorded five digs and against Brigham Young had eight digs and an ace serve. She ranks 11th in career digs per game with a 2.56 per game average.
BUCKEYES HAVE FOUR TELEVISED MATCHES
Ohio State is scheduled to appear in four televised matches this season. The Buckeyes will appear twice in the eight regional broadcasts scheduled by Comcast SportsNet Chicago. OSU will host Purdue Friday, Sept. 23 in a match that will be delayed telecast Sunday, Sept. 25 at 1 p.m. ET. Ohio State’s Friday, Oct. 21 match at Minnesota will be delayed telecast Saturday, Oct. 22 at 5:30 p.m. ET. The Buckeyes have two additional televised matches this season. OSU will host Wisconsin Saturday, Oct. 29 in match with will be delayed telecast by ESPN2 Sunday, Oct. 30 at 3 p.m. ET and will play at Penn State, at 8 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 2 in a live CSTV (College Sports Television) broadcast.
OSU NOW 16TH IN CSTV/AVCA COACHES POLL
The CSTV (College Sports Television/AVCA (American Volleyball Coaches Association) Division I Coaches Top 25 Poll released this week by the AVCA has Ohio State ranked 16th nationally. The Buckeyes received 493 votes. The Buckeyes fell from 14th (736 points) last week. OSU finished the 2004 season with a 30-4 overall record and was ranked sixth in the final 2004 poll. The Buckeyes are one of five Big Ten squads ranked in the top-19 of the poll. Others include Penn State at fourth, Minnesota fifth, Wisconsin 13th and Purdue 19th. Illinois also received votes.
MAIN AND STEVENS NAMED TO PRESEASON ALL-BIG TEN TEAM
The Big Ten Conference announced that Ohio State setter Marisa Main (Jr., Louisville, Ky.) and outside hitter Ami Stevens (So., Centerburg, Ohio) have been named to the 2005 Preseason All-Big Ten Volleyball Team by a vote of the conference coaches. The Buckeyes were picked to finish fourth in the coaches’ preseason poll. Penn State was picked to finish first with Minnesota second and Wisconsin third.
HEAD COACH Jim Stone
Jim Stone is in his 24th season at Ohio State. He has a 478-263 record with the Buckeyes and is 263-151 in Big Ten play. His squads have won Big Ten Championships in 1989, 1991 and 1994 and finished tied for second in 2004 being named the Big Ten Coach of the Year. He was the 1991 Volleyball Monthly National Coach of the Year and the Big Ten Coach of the Year in 1989, 1991, 1994 and 2004. Under Stone, Ohio State has participated in the NCAA championship in 13 of the last 16 years, advancing to the national semifinals in 1991 and 1994. Stone’s coaching career record includes three years at Wyoming (1979-1981). His 26-year career record is 528-305.
JOBST AND DIPRONIO NEWEST MEMBERS OF THE OSU ATHLETICS HALL OF FAME
Outside hitter Gabriele Jobst (1991-94) and setter Audrey DiPronio (1988-90) were inducted into the Ohio State Athletics Hall Of Fame, Friday, Sept. 16 and were honored at halftime of the Ohio State-San Diego State football game on Saturday, Sept. 17. Previous women’s volleyball players in the Hall of Fame include Karen Alsbrook (1977-79), Lisa Bettio (1982-85), Laura Davis (1991-94), Holly O’Leary (1987-90), Mary Ormsby (1977-80) Vanessa Wouters (1996-97) and Leisa Wissler (1988-91).
STEVENS SPENDS THE SUMMER WITH US JUNIOR NATIONAL TEAM
Outside hitter Ami Stevens was selected to the 12-player United State Junior National Team that traveled to Turkey to play in the FIVB Junior Women’s U-20 Volleyball World Championship, July 23-28. The squad finished 1-4 in pool play. She had been in training at the United States Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid, N.Y. since July 8. Stevens was also selected to the team in 2004.
