Gulsah Gunenc, a junior on the Ohio State women’s swimming team, broke a Turkish national record in the 200-meter butterfly at the World University Games. Hitting the wall in 2:14.55, Gunenc won the consolation final, finishing ninth overall.
Gunenc, from Edirne, Turkey (Edirne Anatolian), qualified for the consolation final in 10th place, following a 2:16.03 finish in preliminary races.
“I’m really proud of Gulsah,” Ohio State head coach Jeanne Fleck said. “She didn’t start well at the games and she had been disappointed. She got really sick when she arrived in Turkey and we were really nervous about how she was going to do. Being in her home country, she wanted to do well. So, we’re really excited about her results.”
