COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s and women’s track and field teams traveled nine qualifiers to the 2005 NCAA Track and Field Outdoor Championships in Sacramento, Calif. Events began Wednesday at Sacramento State’s Hornet Stadium and featured a full day of preliminary rounds. Junior Aaron Fisher, a 2004 All-American in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, took his first steps in repeating that distinction by reaching the finals of the event with a qualifying time in the prelims. In the field, senior Bryan Duby was the only Buckeye to compete Wednesday in the men’s hammer.
Fisher, the Indianapolis native who placed fourth in the 2004 NCAA steeple final, clocked an 8:35.18 to finish sixth in his heat and post the 10th fastest time in the prelims to move on to the final set for 9:50 p.m. (EDT) Friday.
Duby, who holds the No. 2 all-time mark at Ohio State in the hammer at 207 feet, 8 inches, finished 20th in the qualifying round and fell shy of gaining a bid to the finals set for Friday. Duby, from Silver Lake, Ohio, fouled on his first throw, but followed with a second heave that measured 197-5. Duby fouled again on his third attempt, placing out of the Top 12 that advanced to the final Friday.
A total of four Buckeyes are set to compete Thursday, headed by two individuals in the high jump in sophomore and Big Ten champion Jessie Stringer for the women and freshman Marios Iacovou for the men. A pair of Buckeyes – Shelaine Larson and Tiffany Davis – throws in the women’s hammer as well. The men’s high jump prelims start at 3:30 p.m. (EDT), while the women’s end begins at 6 p.m. The women’s hammer qualifier is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start.
