COLUMBUS, Ohio – Members of the Ohio State men’s and women’s track and field teams competed in Day No. 2 at the 2005 NCAA Outdoor Championships in Sacramento, Calif., Thursday at Sacramento State’s Hornet Stadium. A pair of high jumpers highlighted the day as Marios Iacovou and Jessie Stringer each tied for the top preliminary mark in the men’s and women’s qualifying rounds. Two senior throwers ended their Ohio State careers in the women’s hammer. Tiffany Davis and Shelaine Larson each failed to advance past the qualifying rounds Thursday.
Iacovou (yah-KOH-VOO), a freshman from Nicosia, Cyprus, cleared 7 feet, 1/4 inches to advance to the high jump final set for 7 p.m. (EDT) Saturday. Later in the day, Stringer eclipsed 5-10 ¾, a career-best leap, to equal the top mark in the women’s high jump prelims. The sophomore will compete in the final at 10 p.m. Saturday. Stringer’s leap stands No. 2 on the all-time list at Ohio State. Tami Smith (2000-03), a former Buckeye All-American, reached 6-0 in 2002. Both Iacovou and Stringer, a native of Franklin, Ind., used their last jump of the day to reach their top mark.
Davis and Larson, who both were Top 5 finishers at the NCAA Mideast championships two weeks ago in Bloomington, Ind., were unable to gain bids to the finals in the women’s hammer. Davis topped out at 181-11, while Larson – ranked 10th nationally heading into the meet – fouled on all three of her attempts.
A total of three Buckeyes are set to compete Friday, highlighted by Aaron Fisher, who will run in the 3,000-meter steeplechase final at 9:50 p.m. (EDT). He finished the prelim Wednesday in a personal-best 8:35.18. For the women, the triple jump tandem of Rosalind Goodwin and Shayla Moore, both seniors, will vie for their fourth and third All-America honors if they advance through to the final with a qualifying mark tomorrow at 10:30 p.m. (EDT).
