The Ohio State men’s and women’s track and field teams competed at the 2005 NCAA Mideast Regional Championships Friday and Saturday at the University of Indiana’s Haugh Complex in Bloomington, Ind. The OSU women’s squad, which was tied for first place after day one Friday, placed fourth with 41 1/3 team points. The OSU men’s team placed 18th with 13 points. Arkansas won the men’s championship with 94.5 team points and Tennessee took the top spot for the women with a score of 82.
The jumps team turned in a stellar performance, featuring a regional champ and two runner-up finishers Saturday.
Seniors Rosalind Goodwin and Shayla Moore, both Big Ten champions this season, placed first and second in the triple jump with career-best lengths. Goodwin, from Louisville, Ky., broke her own school record to finish first with a leap of 43 feet, 10 ½, while Moore, from Jessup, Md., placed behind Goodwin with a mark of 43-9. Goodwin snapped her previous career-best and OSU record of 43-7 ¾, which she set at the 2004 Mideast Regional at LSU. With their Top 2 standings, Goodwin and Moore earned automatic qualifiers to the 2005 NCAA Championships June 8-11 in Sacramento, Calif., as Goodwin will seek her fourth career All-American honor and Moore will compete for her third such distinction.
The Buckeyes added points in the high jump when sophomore Jessie Stringer tied for second place. Stringer, who won the Big Ten championship in the event two weeks ago, cleared 5 feet, 9 ¼ inches to earn the automatic qualifier to the NCAA meet. This season, she won both the indoor 60-meter dash and outdoor 100-meter dash at the Big Ten championship meets. The conference also announced this week its 2005 Spring Academic All-Big Ten teams. Harris was one of 23 Buckeyes combined on the men’s and women’s teams to earn the distinction.
Harris topped the field in the women’s 100-meter dash last month at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium, crossing the finish line in a time of 11.61 seconds. She helped contribute 23 team points in Ohio State’s fifth-place finish, adding a third-place time of 23.95 in the 200-meter dash and helping the 4×100- and 4×400-meter relay teams post season-best marks.
Harris was selected to the Academic All-American team by a vote from the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Goodwin, Larson, Moore Head Nationally-Ranked Buckeyes
Senior thrower Shelanie Larson and senior jumpers Rosalind Goodwin and Shayla Moore each enter the 2005 NCAA Championships ranked in the Top 10 nationally in the declared lists.
With her OSU record-setting leap to win the Mideast triple jump, Goodwin moved up to No. 7 in the country a 43, feet 10 1/2 inches. Moore is just two spots behind at No. 9 with 43-9. Larson also is ranked No.9 in the hammer at a measure of 204-3.

Goodwin Breaks Own Triple Jump Record Exactly One Year From First All-Time Leap
Rosalind Goodwin topped her own OSU record to win the triple jump May 28 at the 2005 Mideast Regional with her leap of 43-10 1/2.
On May 28, 2004, she reached the top of the OSU all-time performance list with a measure of 43-7 3/4 to take runner up.
Moore Holds OSU Triple Record For Bried Period at Mideast Meet
For a brief moment, Shayla Moore’s leap of 43 feet, 9 inches not only held the lead in the 2005 Mideast Regional triple jump championship, but it also topped the all-time performance list at Ohio State. The record and No. 1 standing was short-lived, however, after Rosalind Goodwin extended to 43-10 1/2 in the very next jump of the competition, knocking Moore, the 2005 Big Ten triple jump champion, to second in the event and second all-time at OSU.
The seniors go toe-to-toe once again this week at the national meet.
Fisher Back For More at NCAA’s
Senior Aaron Fisher qualified for the NCAA championships for the third time in his career last week with his fourth-place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Mideast regional.
A 2004 All-American in the event, Fisher will seek to become Ohio State’s third two-time All-American in the steeplechase, joining former multiple-time Olympians Mark Croghan (1988-91; Olympian in 1992, `96 and 2000) and Robert Gary (1992-95; Olympian in 1996, 2004).
Last year, Fisher crossed the finish line at the NCAA meet in fourth place in a time of 8:49.53. He held the top time in the nation heading into the race at 8:37.33.
Youthful High Jumpers Holding Own at Height of Season
Both Marios Iacovou, a freshman, and Jessie Stringer, a sophomore, have proven themselves to be among the top high jumpers in the nation, despite their inexperience at the collegiate leave.
Stringer, the 2005 Big Ten High Jump champ, tied for second at the Mideast regional and holds a top leap of 5-10 this season.
Iacovou hails from Cyprus, a small island country in the Mediterranean Sea. He has cleared the seven-foot mark in each of the indoor and outdoor seasons in his freshman campaign. At the Mideast meet, he established a career-best outdoors at 7-1 to place third.

Junior Brian Olinger joined Fisher in the steeple and ended the race in 12th position.
