Current and Former Buckeyes to Compete in 2005 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State will be well represented at the 2005 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships June 23-26 at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. In all, nine athletes with Buckeye ties will compete in the event, including five current student-athletes and four that served as assistant coaches last season.
Robert Gary, Ohio State cross country head coach and track distance coach, will lead three Buckeyes in the first round of the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase at 9:15 p.m. EDT June 23. The two-time Olympian (1996 Athens and 2004 Athens) ranks second in the entry list with a time of 8:19.46, ahead of OSU teammates Brian Olinger and Aaron Fisher. Olinger, who redshirted the 2005 outdoor season, holds the sixth-best time at 8:31.84, while Fisher, an All-American in the steeple the last two campaigns, stands 11th with a time of 8:35.18, set last week at the NCAA championship meet. Dan Lincoln of Nike, Gary’s Olympic teammate in 2004, tops the steeple list at 8:16.00. Anthony Famiglietti, the third 2004 Olympian in the field, falls in behind Gary at 8:20.04, a figure he timed at the 2005 Jesse Owens Track Classic in Columbus last month.
Three Buckeye seniors also will compete next week in the women’s field events. Rosalind Goodwin and Shayla Moore, both Big Ten champions and multiple All-Americans, hold Top 10 marks in the triple jump. Goodwin, who just won her fourth All-America honor last week with a fifth-place finish at the NCAA meet, is ranked ninth with a mark of 44 feet, 3 1/2 inches. Moore, the 2005 Big Ten triple outdoor champion, trails Goodwin at No. 10 with her career-best leap of 43-9, set at the NCAA Mideast regional May 29. In the throws, Shelaine Larson, a Big Ten and NCAA Mideast runner-up, will participate in the hammer with a top throw this season of 204-3 1/4. The triple jump is set for a 4:30 p.m. EDT start on June 26, while the hammer is slated to begin at 7 p.m. June 25. In addition to Gary, three volunteer coaches from the 2005 Ohio State teams will compete in their first USA championships after making the 2004 U.S. Olympic Trials in 2004. Joel Brown, Rob Myers and Dan Taylor all concluded their Buckeye careers in 2004 as multiple All-Americans and head into the USA championships with some of the top marks in the nation.
Brown enters the 110m hurdles with the No. 4 time in the nation at 13.35, trailing 2004 Olympian Terrence Trammell, who has clocked a 13.12 for the top seed. The first round of the men’s 110m hurdles is set for 8:55 p.m. EDT June 23. A native of Baltimore who will run for Nike, Brown served as a volunteer sprints and hurdles coach this season after winning two straight Big Ten 110-meter hurdles championship in 2003 and ’04.
Myers, who narrowly missed a bid to the 2004 Olympic Games in the 1,500-meter run at the trials last July, will vie for the title in the event, starting with first-round action at 11:25 p.m. EDT June 23. Myers holds the No. 11 spot in the entry list at 3:38.60 and will run for Reebok.
In the field, Taylor, a two-time national champion and nine-time All-American in his career with Ohio State, holds the No. 6 slot in the shot put at 68-1. The 2004 Ohio State Male Athlete of the Year and two-time Big Ten track and field athlete of the year will throw for Nike in the final at 2 p.m. Sunday. Two-time Olympic medalist John Godina of adidas hold the top shot mark in the nation at 72-10.
In addition, Ohio State will have an entrant in the 2005 USA Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championships, which also will run from June 23-26 at the Home Depot Center. Pat Whalen, a freshman on the 2005 men’s team, will throw the shot put in the second event of the meet at 12:30 p.m. EDT on June 23.
