Women’s Lacrosse Falls, 8-7, to Penn in the Third Overtime Period – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (1-1 overall) women’s lacrosse team rallied from being down, 6-4, to Pennsylvania (1-0), only to fall, 8-7, in the third overtime period at Franklin Field in Philadelphia Saturday afternoon. Buckeye Kelly Kremer (Fr., Kennett Square, Pa.) scored a game-high three goals. Quaker Ali Ryan and Rachel Mason shared team-high honors with two goals each.
Penn took a 3-0 lead in the game with a free position goal by Allie Juras (1:29), an unassisted goal by Katie Spofford (4:53) and a free position goal by Ryan at 6:49. Buckeye Lindsay Weiner (So., Eldersburg, Md.) put Ohio State on the scoreboard with a goal at 11:57. Quaker Chrissy Muller scored on a free position shot at 24:04 and OSU’s Ashley Evans (Sr., Ellicott City, Md.) made the halftime score, 4-2 Quakers, with a free position goal at 27:32.
In the second half, a goal by Kremer at 34:33 cut the Penn lead to 4-3. Rachel Mason scored for the Quakers, assisted by Allie Juras at 36:16 gave Penn a 5-3 lead. Buckeye freshman Kristen Slahor (Ellicott City, Md.) cut the Quaker lead to 5-4 with an unassisted goal at 40:19. Penn responded again with a goal by Manson, assisted by at 40:42 to hold a 6-4 lead. OSU’s Kremer’s second goal of the game at 43:57 on a free position shot cut the Penn lead to one at 6-5. Ohio State tied the game at six with a free position goal by Regina Oliver (Sr., Pottstown, Pa.) at 55:52. No further scoring took place during regulation time, sending the contest into overtime. In the first overtime (two 3-minute periods), Ohio State took a 7-6 lead at 64:35 on Kremer’s third goal of the game. Penn responded with a Allison Ambrozy goal at 64:55 to tie the game at seven. Neither team scored during the second overtime period (three minutes sudden death). Penn ended the marathon in the third overtime period at 69:39 with Ryan’s third goal, assisted by Juras to win 8-7.
In goal, Quaker Liz Lorelli picked up the win and recorded 12 saves. OSU’s Kim Hastings (Jr., Sewickley, Pa.) took the loss while recording five saves for the Buckeyes.
Ohio State returns home next week to host two games. The Buckeyes begin American Lacrosse Conference league play when they host sixth-ranked Johns Hopkins, Friday, March 11 at 6 p.m. OSU then hosts Virginia Tech in a non-conference game Sunday, March 13 at 1 p.m. Both games are scheduled to be played in the Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
