COLUMBUS, Ohio – Shelaine Larson, a senior thrower on the Ohio State women’s track and field team, was named female Athlete of the Week by the Big Ten Tuesday. At the Florida Relays last week, Larson claimed the hammer throw title with a career-best heave of 191 feet, 3 inches. The award is the second this season for Larson, who also was honored by the league Feb. 22 during the final week of the indoor season.
With her toss at the Florida Relays, the native of Ventura, Calif., earned a qualifying mark to the 2005 NCAA Mideast Regional Championships May 27-28 in Bloomington, Ind. Larson’s throw ranks atop the Big Ten standings and eighth overall in the national performance standings.
A graduate of Buena High School, Larson is the first Buckeye to claim Big Ten Athlete of the Week honors in the 2005 outdoor season and the 12th OSU thrower to win the award in the last two indoor and outdoor seasons combined.
Both the Ohio State men’s and women’s track and field teams open the home schedule at 10:30 a.m. Saturday with the Ohio State Relays at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
