COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State sophomore Jamee Juarez struck out a season-high ten Loyola Marymount hitters and did not give up an earned run, but saw her nine-game winning streak come to an end as the Buckeye softball team (15-7) fell, 3-2, in the first game of a double-header at Loyola Marymount (16-11) Thursday in Los Angeles.
Three Buckeye errors in the fourth inning led to all three of the Lions’ runs in the game, all of which were unearned. Ohio State finished with a season-high five errors, negating a 7-5 advantage in base hits. It marked the first time this season that Ohio State lost when outhitting its opponent (12-1).
Ohio State sees its four-game winning streak snapped as the Buckeyes fell for just the second time in their last 13 games.
Ohio State scored both its run in the top of the fourth inning. OSU sophomore Christina Douglas (Mesa, Ariz./Dobson) doubled to lead off the inning and advanced to third base on an infield single by junior Billie Jo Carder (Celina, Ohio/Celina). Douglas and Carder then turned a double-steal, with Carder swiping second base and Douglas scoring on the play. Freshman Brittany Vanderink (Hiram, Ohio/Crestwood) then doubled, sending Carder across the plate, but it would be the last run of the game for the Buckeyes.
Loyola Marymount answered with all three of its runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and Lion relief pitcher Kayla Meeks did not allow an OSU hit in the Buckeyes’ final three at bats.
Juarez (La Puente, Calif./Wilson) scattered just five hits in the game, all singles.
Carder and senior Meghan Rowlands (Hilliard, Ohio/Bishop Ready) finished the game with two hits each. The Buckeyes and Lions will meet in game two of the double-header later Thursday afternoon.
