COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s and women’s track and field teams take part in the 2005 Alex Wilson Invitational Friday and Saturday in South Bend, Ind. The University of Notre Dame will play host to event at the Loftus Sports Center.
10 BUCKEYES COMPETE IN LAST CHANCE MEET
The Ohio State men’s and women’s track and field teams will send 10 of its athletes to compete in the 2005 Alex Wilson Invitational for one last chance to improve upon their season marks in order to qualify for the NCAA championships.
The women’s squad will send Rosalind Goodwin, Shelaine Larson, Jenna Harris, Jessie Stringer and Katy Houser to compete in the event. On the men’s side, the Buckeyes will send Bryan Duby, Tony Cole, Brian Olinger, Dan Glaz and Marios Iacovou.
COLE NAMED BIG TEN INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR
The Big Ten Conference announced Tony Cole as the 2005 Indoor Track and Field Freshman of the Year, Wednesday. Cole received the honor following his victory in the 60-meter this past weekend at the conference championships in West Lafayette, Ind., where he timed a mark of 6.76 to earn his first-career conference championship. Cole is just the second Buckeye to earn freshman of the year honors. Former Buckeye Aaron Payne was the first to collect the award in 1990.
Conference teams saw Buckeye track individuals Jenna Harris, Rosalind Goodwin, Bryan Duby and Tony Cole named to the first team conference squad, while Shelanie Larson was named second team.
Goodwin earned conference first-team honors as she became the first OSU student-athlete to win conference titles in both the long and triple jumps in consecutive seasons. The Louisville, Ky., native won the long jump by tying a season-best mark of 20 feet, 3 inches (20-3). In the triple jump Goodwin set the school record with a leap of 43-10 1/2. Harris claimed the 60 with a season-best and NCAA provisional time of 7.41. On the men’s side, Duby won the weight throw with a toss of 65-0 3/4.
Larson claimed second-team honors as she finished runner-up both the weight throw and shot put posting marks of 64-7 and 49-7, respectively. Larson’s throw in the shot put was a season-best.
In addition to his freshman of the year accolade, Cole also was recognized for the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award. The sportsmanship award is given to an individual on each conference team who has demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting. Multi-event athlete Colleen Farrell captured the award for the women’s team.
GOODWIN WINS BACK TO BACK TITLES IN BOTH THE LONG AND TRIPLE JUMPS
Senior Rosalind Goodwin became the first Ohio State student-athlete to record back-to-back titles in both the indoor long jump and triple jump events.
Goodwin won the long jump Saturday with a mark of 20 feet, 3 inches (20-3). The following day, Goodwin claimed the triple jump title with a school record leap of 43-10 1/2. The last Buckeyes’ to pull off back-to-back titles in the triple jump was Monique Hayes in 1992-93.
GOODWIN AND MOORE RANK IN TOP 10 NATIONALLY IN THE TRIPLE JUMP
Seniors Rosalind Goodwin and Shayla Moore rank fifth and ninth respectively in the women’s triple jump nationally following their performances at the 2005 Big Ten Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Goodwin’s first-place leap of 43-10 1/2 at the conference championships gave her back-to-back titles in the event.
Moore finished runner-up to her teammate as she claimed second in the event with a mark of 43-2 3/4.
MOORE, GOODWIN SURPASS 43-FOOT MARK IN THE SAME MEET … AGAIN
Senior jumpers Shayla Moore and Rosalind Goodwin each topped the 43-plus mark in the same meet while competing at the Big Ten championships. Moore and Goodwin surpassed the 43-plus mark earlier this season at the Armory Collegiate Invitational on Feb. 5.
The performances by both jumpers marks the second time in school history that two OSU athletes have surpassed the 43-foot mark in the same meet as well as the same indoor season.
DUBY KEEPS BIG TEN WEIGHT THROW TITLE IN COLUMBUS
Senior thrower Bryan Duby claimed his first conference title in the weight throw at the 2005 Big Ten Championships with a toss of 65-0 3/4. Duby’s first-place effort in the event, marks the third-consecutive season that an Ohio State thrower has claimed the weight throw conference title.
The two previsous seasons, former Buckeye and All-American Dan Taylor claimed the event.
HARRIS AND COLE SWEEP 60-METER DASH
Freshman sprinter Tony Cole and sophomore Jenna Harris gave Ohio State a sweep of the men’s and women’s 60-meter dashes at the Big Ten championships this past weekend.
Cole topped the field as he timed a mark of 6.76, while Harris clocked a NCAA provisional and season-best time of 7.41.
LAST WEEK: MEN SIXTH; WOMEN FIFTH AT BIG TEN CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Ohio State track and field teams competed at the 2005 Big Ten Indoor Championships this past weekend. The men’s squad finished sixth with 49 points as they competed in West Lafayette, Ind. The women, who traveled Ann Arbor, Mich., placed fifth with a tally of 67.5 points.
Leading the women’s fifth-place effort was senior Rosalind Goodwin as she became the first Ohio State student-athlete to record back-to-back titles in both the indoor long jump and triple jump events. Also joining Goodwin on the championship podium was sophomore sprinter Jenna Harris as she claimed her first-career Big Ten title by winning the 60-meter dash. In the field events, senior Shelaine Larson missed first-place standings by one place as she finished runner-up in the shot put and weight throw.
On the men’s side, Ohio State received winning performances from senior Bryan Duby and freshman Tony Cole. Duby paced the field in the weight throw to give the Buckeyes the weight championship for the third straight season. Cole earned his first Big Ten indoor title in the 60m to give Ohio State a sweep in the event on both the men’s and women’s side.
FORMER BUCKEYES BROWN AND MYERS BLAZE TRACk AT USA INDOORS
Joel Brown and Rob Myers, who both earned All-America honors in their senior seasons with the Ohio State men’s track and field team in 2004, turned in top marks in their respective events at the 2005 USA Track and Field Indoor Championships Feb. 25-27 at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletics Center in Boston, Mass. Brown and Myers currently serve as volunteer assistant coaches for the 2005 Ohio State track and field team.
Brown, who was a three-time Big Ten hurdles champion in his OSU career, won the men’s 60-meter hurdles Sunday with a time of 7.60. As a competitor for Nike, Brown bettered the 7.63 clocked by teammate Anwar Moore.
Myers, also a multiple All-American and past Big Ten champion, placed second in the 1,500-meter run Saturday with a mark of 3:45.18. Myers is a member of Team Reebok.
Both Brown and Myers have completed indoor competition in the U.S. The pair will run at the 2005 Jesse Owens Track Classic May 6-7 at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
LARSON NAMED BIG TEN ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Shelaine Larson was named female Athlete of the Week by the Big Ten. Larson concluded her indoor home career Feb. 19 by setting a career best in winning the weight throw at the Scarlet and Gray Invitational in French Field House.
Larson reached a provisional qualifier to the 2005 NCAA Indoor Championships with her winning mark of 66 feet, 3 inches (66-3), which stands as the top throw in the Big Ten heading into the conference meet this Saturday and Sunday at Ann Arbor, Mich. She also heads to the league meet this weekend with the No. 2 measure in the shot put at 49-5 1/2.
Larson’s weight mark from the Scarlet and Gray Invite also serves as the 11th-best throw in the nation during the 2005 season.
OLINGER SETS SCHOOL RECORD IN INDOOR 5,000-METER RUN
At the Iowa State Classic Feb. 11, junior distance runner Brian Olinger set a school record in the 5,000-meter run. In the event, Olinger topped the field in a time of 13:54.34, which provisionally qualified him for the NCAA championships.
Olinger’s provisional qualifying time in the 5,000m marks the second indoor event the Fresno, Ohio native has qualified for this season. Earlier this year, Olinger provisionally qualified for the 3,000m as he timed an 8:01.36.
OLINGER NO. 2 ALL-TIME IN INDOOR 3,000 METERS
Junior Brian Olinger clocked a time of 8:01.36 in the 3,000-meter run to place third at the Armory Collegiate Invitational. Olinger’s time in the event smashed his previous season-best time of 8:10.25, moving him into second in the all-time Ohio State indoor record books. The previous second-best 3,000-meter mark was 8:01.60 and was run in 1991 by two-time Olympian Mark Croghan. The top mark of 7:52.63 is held by current OSU distance coach Robert Gary, who also is a two-time Olympian.
IACOVOU TIES FOR THIRD ON ALL-TIME HIGH JUMP LIST Freshmen jumper Marios Iacovou tied for third on the all-time Ohio State indoor high jump list with his leap at the Armory Collegiate Invitational. Iacovou’s mark in the event tied former Buckeye Otis Winston, who also jumped 7-1 3/4 back in 1995. Mark Cannon holds the OSU standard at 7-3 1/4, set in 1991.
OHIO STATE ASSISTANT Robert Gary NAMED CROSS COUNTRY RUNNER OF YEAR
Robert Gary, Ohio State cross country head coach and track and field distance coach, was named 2004 United States Cross Country Runner of the Year by Track and Field News.
Gary was awarded the honor following a tremendous campaign that saw him qualify for the 2004 World Cross Country Championships in both the 4 and 12-kilometer runs, posting times of 11:15 and 35:07, respectively, at the U.S. cross country championships.
At the world championships, Gary was the first American finisher in the 4k, clocking a time of 12:12.
In 2003, Gary also qualified for the world championships, winning the 4k title and placing sixth in the 12k run. Gary’s 2004 qualification to the world championships in two events marked the first time a U.S. runner made both teams in consecutive years.
Also in 2004, Gary earned a second trip to the summer Olympics in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in Athens, Greece. His first trip to the Olympics came at the 1996 Atlanta Games.
This past fall, Gary directed the men’s team to a winning performance at the All-Ohio Intercollegiate Cross Country Championships and its fourth appearance to the NCAA championships where the team finished 22nd of 30 teams.
DUBY AND LARSON MOVE INTO OSU ALL-TIME TOP 5 IN WEIGHT
Senior throwers Bryan Duby and Shelaine Larson’s personal-best marks in the weight throw this season have moved both athletes into the Ohio State all-time Top 5 rankings in the event. Duby’s heave of 68-2 1/2 at the Scarlet and Gray Invitational moved him into fourth in the all-time performance list.
Larson’s performance of 66-3 places her at the No. 4 slot all-time in Buckeye annals.
Duby and Larson join fellow Buckeyes Marios Iacovou, Rosalind Goodwin, Shayla Moore and Brian Olinger as the only current Buckeyes listed on the all-time indoor performance lists. Goodwin tops both the long jump (20-9) and triple jump (43-6 1/2), while Moore stands in third in the triple at a length of 42-8 3/4.
OLINGER POSTS STRONG 2004 CROSS COUNTRY SEASON
In the 2004 cross country season, Brian Olinger turned in one of the best individual performances in Ohio State history, capping his year with All-America honors after a 21st-place finish at the NCAA championships.
The native of Fresno, Ohio helped the Buckeyes to their fourth NCAA championships appearance in the last five years as he finished fourth at the 2004 NCAA Regional Championships, clocking a time of 30:18.7 in the 10-kilometer race. At the Big Ten Championships, Olinger was just as impressive, capturing first team all-league with a seventh-place finish in a time of 24:21.0.

Individuals who have qualified for the 2005 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships will return to action March 11-12 as they travel to Fayetteville, Ark.
