COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Big Ten Conference announced Tony Cole as the 2005 Indoor Track and Field Freshman of the Year, Wednesday. Cole received the honor following his victory in the 60-meter this past weekend at the conference championships in West Lafayette, Ind., where he timed a mark of 6.76 to earn his first-career conference championship. Cole is just the second Buckeye to earn freshman of the year honors. Former Buckeye Aaron Payne was the first to collect the award in 1990.
Conference teams saw Buckeye track individuals Jenna Harris, Rosalind Goodwin, Bryan Duby and Tony Cole named to the first team conference squad, while Shelanie Larson was named second team.
Goodwin earned conference first-team honors as she became the first OSU student-athlete to win conference titles in both the long and triple jumps in consecutive seasons. The Louisville, Ky., native won the long jump by tying a season-best mark of 20 feet, 3 inches (20-3). In the triple jump Goodwin set the school record with a leap of 43-10 1/2. Harris claimed the 60 with a season-best and NCAA provisional time of 7.41. On the men’s side, Duby won the weight throw with a toss of 65-0 3/4.
Larson claimed second-team honors as she finished runner-up both the weight throw and shot put posting marks of 64-7 and 49-7, respectively. Larson’s throw in the shot put was a season-best.
In addition to his freshman of the year accolade, Cole also was recognized for the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award. The sportsmanship award is given to an individual on each conference team who has demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting. Multi-event athlete Colleen Farrell captured the award for the women’s team.
The Ohio State men’s and women’s track and field teams will send 10 of its student-athletes to compete in the 2005 Alex Wilson Invitational for one last chance to improve upon their season marks in order to qualify for the NCAA championships. The last chance meet will be held in South Bend, Ind., at the Loftus Sports Center.
