COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 15th-ranked Ohio State (4-1 overall, 2-0 American Lacrosse Conference) women’s lacrosse team used a free position goal by Regina Oliver (Sr., Pottstown, Pa.) at 54:02 to defeat Ohio University (1-5, 0-3), 8-7, Thursday night in the Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. OSU’s Kelly Kremer (Fr., Kennett Square, Pa.) and Ohio’s Dana Dobbie collected three goals each in the game. Ohio State overcame a 5-4 Bobcat lead at halftime with the help of four free position goals in the second half for the victory.
The Bobcats opened the scoring with a free position goal by Dobbie at 5:36. Kremer responded with a goal at 8:12 to tie the game at one. The Buckeyes took a 2-1 lead at 9:04 with a Lindsay Weiner goal, assisted by KC Carter. The Bobcats tied the game at two with a Frannie Sullivan score at 16:01. Ohio State regained the lead (3-2) with a Carter goal at 20:08. The Bobcats broke the game open with a trio of goals in the next three and a half minutes. The run began with a Kristen Gombeski goal at 21:02. Dobbie scored her second goal at 23:06 with an assist from Caitlin Link. Sullivan’s second goal of the game at 24:35 on a free position shot gave the Bobcats a 5-3 lead. OSU’s Andrea Fischer found the net at 28:42 on an assist from Kremer to cut the margin to 5-4 at half.
Ohio State opened the second half with a free position goal by Natale Miller at 32:05 to tie the game at five. Kremer’s second goal of the game tied the score at six on a free position shot at 34:47. The Bobcats responded with two goals from Molly Wurdack, the first at 36:02 on a free position shot to tie the score at six. Her second goal was unassisted at 36:48 to gave Ohio a 7-6 lead. The Buckeyes countered with a free position score by Carter at 44:55 to tie the game at seven. Ohio State took an 8-7 lead with Kremer’s third goal at 47:41. Ohio tied the game for the seventh time with Dobbie’s third goal of the game with an assist from Amanda Diehl. Oliver scored the winning goal for Ohio State at 54:02 on a free position attempt for the final 9-8 score. In goal for Ohio State, Kim Hastings (Jr., Sewickley, Pa.) picked up the win while making five saves. For the Bobcats, Jayme Levy took the loss in goal, collecting seven saves.
Ohio State will complete a four-game home stand next Tuesday, March 22 when they host Cornell at 1 p.m.
