Four Buckeye Divers Advance to NCAAs Following Qualifier – Ohio State Buckeyes

Four Ohio State divers qualified for the 2005 NCAA Championships in their performances this weekend at NCAA Zone Regional Qualifying Championships in West Lafayette, Ind. Three members of the men’s team move on to the NCAA championships, while one member for the women’s team advanced. Seven qualifying spots were available for each of the men’s and women’s teams for Zone C.
Mitch Richeson (Sr., Greenwood, Ind./Greenwood) qualified third for the Buckeyes following a successful weekend. Richeson won the 1-meter event with 326.35 points Friday and placed second in the 3-meter event with 583.25 points. Kellen Harkness (So., Puyallup, Wash./Cascade Christian), who followed Richeson in fourth place, finished the meet with a 10th-place finish in the 1-meter with 283.65 points and a fourth-place finish in the 3-meter, scoring 526.10 points. The third Buckeye qualifier was Nick Hanneman (Jr., Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington), who grabbed the final spot in Zone C. He finished eighth in the 1-meter with 288.25 points and a 26th finish in the 3-meter event with 236.85 points.
Julie Broms will represent the women’s diving squad after qualifying sixth. Broms opened the competition with a fourth-place finish in the 3-meter competition, accumulating 315.60 points. Broms finished 11th in the 1-meter competition with 508.65 points.
“We had a great weekend,” Vince Panzano, Ohio State head diving coach, said. “We’re sending four divers to the NCAA championships and I think that’s a pretty good number. They all are capable of scoring and placing high. I think Mitch has a chance of winning a title and so does Julie if they dive well.”
The diving squads will join their respective teams when they travel to the 2005 NCAA Championships. The women’s swimming and diving team will travel to West Lafayette, Ind., March 15-19. The men’s squad will head to Minneapolis, Minn., March 24-26.
