Women’s Lacrosse Upsets No. 6 Johns Hopkins, 12-9 in Outdoor/Indoor Contest – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (2-1 overall, 1-0 American Lacrosse Conference) women’s lacrosse team outscored sixth-ranked Johns Hopkins (1-2, 1-1) four to one in the final 11 minutes to secure a 12-9 victory that started outdoors and finished indoor due to weather conditions. OSU’s Kelly Kremer (Fr., Kennett Square, Pa.) had a career-high six goals for the Buckeyes with KC Carter (Jr., Birchrunville, Pa) contributing four. Leading Johns Hopkins was Mary Key with two goals.
Ohio State opened the game with two Carter goals, the first assisted by Kristen Slahor (Fr., Ellicott City, Pa.) at 1:28 and the second at 6:38 on a free position attempt. Johns Hopkins made it 2-1 with a Key goal at 8:25. The Buckeyes scored the next three goals to take a 5-1 lead. Kremer, with an assist from Slahor, scored at 10:26. Kremer scored again at 18:20, unassisted. Kelyn Laws, on a free position attempt, made the lead, 5-1, at 19:17. The Blue Jays with a goal by Kristen Miller, assisted by Sarah Walsh at 19:46 and by Steph Janice, assisted by Erin Riordan at 21:21 cut the lead to 5-3. At that point, a snow flurry began and the officials suspended play due to the field conditions. After a 44-minute delay, play resumed on the indoor turf field of the Woody Hayes Athletic Complex. Walsh scored at 22:56 on a Key assist to cut the lead to 5-4. Kremer’s third goal gave Ohio State a 6-4 lead at 23:35. Johns Hopkins scored twice to tie the game at halftime at six-all. Ohio State opened the scoring in the second half with a Kremer goal at 34:45 on a free position attempt. The Blue Jays tied the game at seven on a Kirby Houck goals at 41:56, assisted by Lauren Schwarzmann. Kremer’s fifth goal made it 8-7, OSU, at 43:18. Key responded with a goal at 46:17 to tie the game at eight. The Buckeyes scored the next four goals to open up a 12-8 lead. Carter tallied twice, the first at 48:59 on an assist from Kremer and at 51:51 on a free position shot. Kremer scored her sixth goal at 55:43 on Slahor’s third assist of the game. Lindsay Weiner (So., Eldersburg, Md.) gave the Buckeyes a 12-8 lead at 56:54. Johns Hopkins made it 12-9 with a Kadie Stamper goal at 58:16 with a Key assist to end the scoring. OSU’s Kim Hastings (Jr., Sewickley, Pa.) picked up the win in goal while making 14 saves. Blue Jay Lauren Riddick took the loss for Johns Hopkins and had seven saves in the contest.
Ohio State continues at home at 1 p.m., Sunday, March 13 when they host Virginia Tech (1-2), a 12-11 loser to Ohio University Friday in triple-overtime.
