Two Buckeye Divers Improve Chances of Advancing to NCAAs on First Night of Qualifiers – Ohio State Buckeyes

Two divers from the Ohio State men’s and women’s squad improved their chances of advancing to the 2005 NCAA Championships following the Zone Regional Qualifying championships Friday in West Lafayette, Ind. Mitch Richeson claimed the 1-meter event with 326.35, roughly six points ahead of Purdue diver Steven LoBue. On the women’s side, Julie Broms placed fourth in the 3-meter competition. The regional qualifying continues Saturday-Sunday, with the men’s and women’s platform event, the women’s 1-meter and the men’s 3-meter.
Richeson, a senior from Greenwood, Ind. (Greenwood), also won the 1-meter at the 2005 Big Ten Championships and has taken the top spot in the 1-meter eight times overall this season. Nick Hanneman (Jr., Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington) placed eighth in the event scoring 288.25 points, Kellen Harkeness (So., Puyallup, Wash./Cascade Christian) followed in 10th with 283.65 points and Marc Dreyer (Jr., Port Elisabeth, South Africa/Grey) finished 18th with 245.90 points.
For the women, Broms (So., Springfield, Ill./North Central) increased her chances of moving on to the NCAA championships in the 3-meter springboard with a fourth-place finish and 315.60 points. Broms is the 2005 Big Ten Champion in the 3-meter event. Anesa Beard (So., Franklin, Ind./Franklin Community) finished 10th for the Buckeyes with 275.25 points.
The diving squads will join their respective teams when they travel to the 2005 NCAA Championships. The women’s team will travel to West Lafayette, Ind., March 15-19. The men’s squad will head to Minneapolis, Minn., March 24-26.
