Ohio State Finishes Third, Records 8 NCAA Qualifying Times in Total – Ohio State Buckeyes

The Ohio State women’s swimming and diving team finished third at the Ohio State University Swimming and Diving Invitational Sunday at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. The team scored 472 points, while Minnesota won the invitational with 1,254.50 points. Penn State finished second. During the three-day meet, the Buckeyes recorded eight NCAA “B” qualifying times.
In the final relay event of the meet, the 400-yard freestyle relay, the Ohio State team touched the wall in 3:30.80. Nicole Maglich (Sr., Sarasota, Fla./Sarasota), Linda Lund-Kristiansen (So., Roennede, Denmark/Haslev), Annie Rennebohm (So., Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) and Griet Buelens (So., Kapelle, Belgium/Ursulinen Mechelen) each swam a leg of the 400-yard freestyle relay to finish in sixth.
Both Maglich and Buelens returned for the 1,650-yard freestyle. Maglich finished the mile first of the two Buckeyes, clocking in a time of 16:42.08 to finish fourth. Buelens was only seconds behind with a 16:43.08 to finish fifth. Both times were NCAA “B” qualifying times. In the 100-yard freestyle, Rennebohm scored the highest for Ohio State. She finished 22nd with a time of 53.04.
Competing in the 200-yard breaststroke for Ohio State was Rebekah Rychvalsky (Jr., Sydney, Australia/Castle Hill). Clocking in a time of 2:24.33, Rychvalsky finished the event in eighth place. Steph Fennell (Jr., Campbellville, Ontario/Milton District) was the top finisher for the Buckeyes in the 200-yard backstroke. She finished the race in sixth after recording a time of 2:05.99.
Gulsah Gunenc (Jr., Edirne, Turkey/Edirne Anatolian) out-touched all other competitors in the qualifying heats of the 200-yard butterfly. Clocking in an NCAA “B” qualifying time, Gunenc could not compete in the final because she had to catch a flight to compete at the 2005 European Championships in the afternoon. In the afternoon finals, Buelens finished the fastest of all Buckeyes, clocking in a time of 2:02.42 to finish third. Maglich finished eighth in the event with a time of 2:07.42.
“I’m really happy with the meet,” Jeanne Fleck, Ohio State head coach, said. “Our girls swam fast and they came out strong in almost every event. This morning was a little rough. I think they were nervous for finals. But they got it together and swam well this afternoon.”
Following the holiday break, the Scarlet and Gray will welcome Marshall at the Bill and Mae McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion on Jan. 13 at 6 p.m.
