Nicole Maglich wins 200-Free, Sets `B’ Time at Ohio State University Invitational – Ohio State Buckeyes

Columbus, Ohio – Nicole Maglich out-raced all other competitors in the 200-yard freestyle to help the Buckeyes climb into third place after the second day of the Ohio State Swimming and Diving Invitational Saturday at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. Maglich hit the wall in a time of 1:48.42, recording an NCAA “B” cut time for the second time in as many nights to win the event. Ohio State has scored 355 points in the first two days of the meet to sit in third place. Minnesota sits on top of the leader board with a score of 841.50, followed by Penn State with 492 points.
The opening final event of day second day was the 200-yard medley relay. The team of Steph Fennell (Jr., Campbellville, Ontario/Milton District), Rebekah Rychvalsky (Jr., Sydney, Australia/Castle Hill), Linda Lund-Kristiansen (So., Roennede, Denmark/Haslev) and Maglich, a senior from Sarasota, Fla. (Sarasota) clocked in an overall time of 1:45.47 to finish in fifth-place.
In the 400-yard individual medley, Gulsah Gunenc (Jr., Edirne, Turkey/Edirne Anatolian) clocked a time of 4:25.39. The time earned her sixth place in the event. Gunenc returned for the 100-yard butterfly, where she recorded a third-place finish (55.75). Following less than a second behind was Griet Buelens (So., Kapelle, Belgium/Ursulinen Mechelen). Buelens hit the wall in 56.27 to finish fourth.
In the 100-yard breaststroke event, Rychvalsky swam 1:05.18. The time earned her a fifth-place finish in the event, less than one second out of first place. Fennell was the Buckeyes’ fastest swimmer in the 100-yard backstroke event. The team co-captain swam 58.08 to finish in ninth place.
Competing in the diving well, Julie Broms (Jr., Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) scored 245.25 to place seventh in the 1-meter springboard.
In the final event of the night, the Scarlet and Gray finished third in the 800-yard freestyle relay. The team of Maglich, Gunenc, Annie Rennebohm (So., Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) and Buelens recorded a time of 7:28.98 in the event.
“It was exciting. It was a great night with the way we attacked and swam well. It probably was the best second night we’ve had at an invitational since I’ve been at Ohio State,” Jeanne Fleck, now in her seventh year at Ohio State, said. “We swam well this morning in the prelims and swam even faster tonight in the finals.”
Sunday is the final day of the Ohio State Swimming and Diving Invitational is Sunday, beginning with preliminary events at 10 a.m. followed by finals at 3 p.m.
