Ohio State women’s swimmer Gulsah Gunenc broke two records for her native country of Turkey at the 2005 European Short Course Championships held in Trieste, Italy, Dec. 8-11. The two records came in the 200-meter butterfly and the 400-meter individual medley. Her times in the 200-meter butterfly and in the 100-meter butterfly both convert to NCAA “B” consideration times.
After claiming the fastest qualifying spot in the 200-yard butterfly on the final day of the Ohio State Swimming and Diving Invitational, the junior from Edirne, Turkey (Edirne Anatolian) flew to Trieste to compete in the Short Course championships. Her opening event for the championships was the 200-meter butterfly, in which she raced to a No. 15 finish with a Turkish record of 2:12.86. When converted to yards, this time qualifies as an NCAA “B” cut time.
On the third day of the championships, she finished 28th in the 100-meter butterfly with a 1:01.39, a second NCAA “B” qualifying time when converted to yards. Her final event, the 400-meter individual medley, was on the final day of competition. She finished 18th with her second Turkish record of 4:53.68.
