Lauren Daykin to Join 2006 Ohio State Softball Squad – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Lauren Daykin, who helped lead Manatee Community College to the 2005 Junior College World Series, will join the Ohio State softball team for the 2006 season, OSU head coach Linda Kalafatis has announced. Daykin, a native of Australia, will be a junior for the Buckeyes this spring with two years of eligibility remaining.
Daykin comes to Ohio State primarily as a catcher but could also help the Buckeyes at third base and designated hitter.
“We are thrilled to have Lauren join us this season and be a part of the junior class, which is already a very good class,” Kalafatis said. “She fills an immediate need for us at catcher and in just adding depth to our roster. Lauren hit about 30 home runs in junior college ball so we know she has power potential. She wasn’t with us in the fall so she will have to catch up quickly, but we are eager to find out just how she will help us.”
Daykin was a first-team all-conference selection at Manatee C.C. as the Lancers posted a 50-14 overall record and won the Florida Community College Athletic Association title and the Gulf Division championship. She will join an OSU squad of 10 returning letterwinners from a 2004 squad that went 32-17 and finished fourth in the Big Ten.
“Lauren was a member of the Australian Junior National team and she aspires to make the Australian Olympic team,” Kalafatis said. “We certainly want to see if we can aid her in that process.”
