The Ohio State women’s swimming and diving team won nine of the 11 events to down Kenyon, 116-89 Friday night at the Bill and Mae McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. Nicole Maglich, Griet Buelens and Gulsah Gunenc each recorded three NCAA `B’ cut times as Ohio State opened the meet by winning four events in a row.
The meet started with the 400-yard medley relay event. The Buckeye relay team of Maglich (Sr., Sarasota, Fla./Sarasota), Rebekah Rychvalsky (Jr., Sydney, Australia/Castle Hill), Gunenc (Edirne, Turkey/Edirne Anatolian) and Linda Lund-Kristianson (So., Roennede, Denmark/Haslev) pooled their talents to place first in the event, recording a time of 3:53.92.
Buelens (So., Kapelle, Belgium/Ursulinen Mechelen) won the first individual event of the night, out-reaching the other swimmers by fifteen seconds when she finished the 1,000-yard freestyle in 10:15.38. Samantha Johnson finished the event third, clocking a time of 10:40.21.
Maglich returned for her first individual event of the evening – the 200-yard freestyle – and opened with an NCAA `B’ cut time. The Buckeye co-captain swam to a 1:50.21 finish to win the event. Lund-Kristianson finished the Buckeyes four-event winning streak, recording a time of 24.54 in the 50-yard freestyle event.
In the 200-yard butterfly, Buelens and Gunenc each recorded NCAA `B’ qualifying times. For Buelens, the win was her second individual victory of the night. Her time of 2:00.19 is one second faster than her winning time that crowned her Big Ten champion last season. Gunenc followed Buelens, clocking her NCAA `B’ cut time at 2:01.55. Lund-Kristianson’s second individual win during the meet came in the 100-yard freestyle when she hit the wall in a time of 52.90.
Stephanie Fennell (Jr., Campbellville, Ontario/Milton District) won the 200-yard backstroke when she hit the wall in a time of 2:06.14. Maglich’s third win of the night came in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:55.57. Rebekah Rychvalsky (Jr., Sydney, Australia/Castle Hill) finished second in the final individual event of the meet, the 200-yard breaststroke (2:24.00). Whitney Hackman (Fr., Goshen, Ind./Northridge) finished in third with a time of 2:25.31.
The Buckeye 400yard freestyle relay team reached the wall a body-length ahead of the Kenyon relay team for the win. The team of Buelens, Annie Rennebohm (So., Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington), Stasia von Rahl (Fr., Mishawka, Ind./St. Joseph’s) and Gunenc clocked in a time of 3:33.57.
“I’m very happy with the meet,” Jeanne Fleck, Ohio State head coach, said. “We were solid all the way across the board. Kenyon gave us a bit of a scare, so we had to reorganize ourselves, but overall I think we were solid. I think Griet swam really well. She really had a solid meet and that was good for her.”
The Buckeyes next meet Cleveland State Tuesday at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion at 6 p.m.
