The Ohio State women’s swimming and diving team fell to both Michigan and Purdue in its season home opener at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. The Buckeyes lost to Michigan 208.50-91.50, while Purdue won 231-69. Purdue beat Michigan 156-144. During the meet, the Buckeyes recorded nine season best times for the team.
The Buckeyes opened the meet finishing third in the 200-yard medley relay. The team of Stephanie Fennell (Jr., Campbellville, Ontario/Milton District), Rebekah Rychvalsky (Jr., Sydney, Australia/Castle Hill), Gulsah Gunenc (Edirne, Turkey/Edirne Anatolian) and Linda Lund (So., Roennede, Denmark/Haslev) combined for a time of 1:47.73.
In the first individual race, Nicole Maglich (Sr., Sarasota, Fla./Sarasota) finished third after a close race in the 1,000-yard freestyle. Maglich, Michigan’s Susan Gilliam and Purdue’s Erica Chandler remained within a second of each other the entire race. Gilliam pulled for the win while Maglich finished third with a lifetime-best time and the team’s fastest time this season, 9:59.80.
Griet Buelens (So., Kapelle, Belgium/Ursulinen Mechelen) finished third in the 200-yard freestyle. Buelens touched the wall in 1:51.50. Gunenc followed by out-racing Michigan in the 200-yard butterfly, although Purdue’s Carlene Takaki managed the win by two hundredths of a second. Gunenc’s time of 2:00.57 was a lifetime-best time for the junior. In the 100-yard freestyle Maglich returned to finish second against Michigan, clocking in at 52.71.
Maglich returned for the second distance freestyle event – the 500 – and led the first half of the race. Purdue’s Chandler surpassed Maglich in the last quarter of the event. Maglich clocked in at 4:54.44, taking second place.
Gunenc for the second time in the meet lost a butterfly event to only one person. Purdue’s Takaki won the 100-butterfly, while Gunenc followed in second with a lifetime-best time of 56.17.
Anesa Beard (Jr., Franklin, Ind./Franklin) combined six dives in the 1-meter event for a total score of 240.00. The score placed her ahead of the Michigan divers, and only Purdue’s Carrie McCambridge surpassed Beard’s score with 268.40. The divers then moved to the 3-meter springboard competition. Beard was the highest Buckeye finisher in the event, placing third in both dual-meets in six dives. McCambridge won the 3-meter with 332.15.
In the final event of the night, the Buckeye relay team of Maglich, Buelens, Lund and Annie Rennebohm pooled their talents in the 400-yard freestyle relay to race to a third-place finish overall in a time of 3:31.34.
“We’ve got a lot of work to do,” Jeanne Fleck, Ohio State head coach, said. “There were a lot of decent swims today. Nicole in the 1,000 – that was a great swim. That was her lifetime-best time. Gulsah in the 100 and 200 butterfly – those were both lifetime best times. So I can’t complain when two of our girls who were NCAA qualifiers are getting lifetime best times in the second meet of the season.”
Up next, the Buckeyes meet Kenyon Friday at 6 p.m. in the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.
