COLUMBUS, Ohio – Five members of the Ohio State men’s soccer team have been named All-Big Ten, the conference announced Thursday in Evanston, Ill., at the annual awards banquet. OSU senior defender Kyle Veris (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville/Akron) earned first-team honors, while second-team honors went to senior forward Kevin Nugent (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville), junior midfielder Brent Rohrer (Springfield, Ohio/Catholic) and junior defender Dustin Kirby (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor).
In addition, OSU freshman midfielder Danny Irizarry (Lawrenceville, Ga./Greater Atlanta Christian) was named to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team.
Veris, who was also a first-team all-league pick in 2004, has started 13 games for the Buckeyes, including all six Big Ten games. He helped lead Ohio State to a runner-up finish in the conference regular season, a No. 2 seed in the Big Ten tournament and a quarterfinal win over host Northwestern Thursday. Veris owns a goal and an assist and becomes the fourth OSU player to earn first-team All-Big Ten honors twice.
Nugent, an OSU co-captain this season, leads Ohio State in scoring with eight goals, four of which were game-winners, including Thursday in the quarterfinal win over Northwestern. His regular season goal total of seven and point total of 18 both tied for sixth in the conference. Nugent’s .641 shots on goal percentage is the best on the team.
Rohrer, OSU’s defensive midfield player, has played in all 19 games, starting 18, and scored the game-winning goal at Wisconsin Oct. 2. He was the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week two weeks ago and has played in all 60 games since arriving at Ohio State.
Kirby has been one of the Buckeyes’ most consistent and valuable defenders the last three years, having started every game but one. He played all but 10 minutes of a possible 1,621 in the regular season and had one assist.
Irizarry played his way into the starting lineup in 10 games this season and contributed two goals and four assists. His assist total ranked 10th in the league regular season statistics.
OSU junior Antonio Garcia (Santa Rosa, Calif./Montgomery/Santa Rosa CC) was Ohio State’s recipient of the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award. He has played in all 19 games this season and made five starts and has one assist.
