COLUMBUS, Ohio – The first day of the sprint hurdle events took place Saturday at the U.S. Olympic Trials – Track and Field at Alex G. Spanos Track Stadium in Sacramento, Calif. Ohio State senior Joel Brown, who completed his Buckeye career as a three-time All-American and two-time Big Ten champion, earned a berth in the semifinal of the men’s 110-meter hurdles as he placed among the top times in the qualifying and quarterfinal rounds Saturday.
Brown opened the day with a time of 13.62 to place third in Heat No. 3 and hold the seventh-best time in the qualifiers. In the quarterfinal, the Baltimore native, running in Lane No. 4 beside 1996 Olympic Gold medallist Allen Johnson of Team Nike, clocked a 13.57 for fourth place in Heat No. 1 and advance to the semifinal, where Brown will assume the No. 11 seed. Brown is the sixth athlete with an Ohio State connection to make the finals of their respective event at the trials.
The final day of the 2004 U.S. Olympic Trials is Sunday with fellow Ohio State senior Rob Myers joining Brown on the track in search of a spot on the Olympic roster in the men’s 1,500-meter final. Ohio State cross country head coach and track and field assistant coach Robert Gary gained his second-career bid to the U.S. team with a third-place finish in the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase Friday night.
