Rob Myers Advances to Final of 1,500-Meter Run at U.S. Olympic Trials – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – One night after his head coach, Robert Gary, earned a spot on the U.S. team at the 2004 Olympic Trials – Track and Field with a career-best time in the men’s steeplechase, Ohio State senior Rob Myers advanced to the final of the 1,500-meter run in search of his own bid to Athens, Greece. Myers, who completed his Buckeye career in 2004 as an All-American in the 1,500m this season, clocked a career-best time of 3:39.96 to move on to the final Sunday evening at 7:30 p.m. Also competing Friday evening at Alex G. Spanos Track Stadium in Sacramento, Calif. was junior thrower Amarachi Ukabam, who competed in her second final of the 2004 trials with a No. 8 finish.
Myers, a native of Rushville, Ohio, placed third in Heat No. 2 behind the Top 2 times in the 1,500m field in Nike teammates Alan Webb (3:39.74) and Michael Stember (3:39.92). Myers will assume Lane No. 5 in the final Sunday evening.
Ukabam, who eclipsed 52 feet to finish 10th in the qualifying round of the women’s shot put Thursday, used a heave of 51-11 (15.82m) to place in the Top 8 in the trials’ field. Laura Gerraughty represented the University of North Carolina with a U.S. Trials winning performance of 60-8.50 (18.50m). Earlier this week, Ukabam placed 12th in the discus final at a distance of more than 180 feet.
Saturday marks the first day of the men’s and women’s sprint hurdles event, which will feature former Buckeye and 2001 indoor and outdoor NCAA champion Donica Merriman (1998-2001) in the women’s 100-meter hurdles. Joel Brown (2000-04), who concluded his OSU career this season with is third All-America honor, will run in the 110-meter hurdles. Qualifying rounds of the 100m event are set for 4:30 p.m. (EDT), while the 110m hurdles are scheduled to run at 5:30 p.m. (EDT).
