Men’s Review
The Ohio State men’s team completed a record-setting outdoor season with its finest finish at the NCAA championships since 1993. Four individuals claimed five All-America honors as the Buckeyes claimed a tie for fourth place at the 2004 national meet in Austin, Texas. The Buckeyes placed just one point behind perennial power LSU.
Senior thrower Dan Taylor concluded his Ohio State career with a runner-up finish in the shot put and a third-place score in the hammer. He ended his career with three consecutive Big Ten crowns in the shot put, a Mideast regional title in the hammer and a record holder at Ohio State and the Big Ten. Taylor also added his second straight Male Athlete of the Penn Relays award in 2004.
Two other seniors finished their time at OSU with All-America performances as senior hurdler Joel Brown, the Big Ten hurdles champ, claimed third at nationals in the 110-meter hurdles, his second straight All-America performance. Brown won the 110-meter hurdles at Big Ten’s. Rob Myers took fourth in the 1,500-meter run, while fellow distance man and Big Ten champion Aaron Fisher also finished fourth in the steeplechase. Fisher and Brown held top national times in their events heading into the NCAA meet. The Buckeyes placed third at the Big Ten meet and fourth at the NCAA Mideast regional before their Top 4 standing at nationals.
Women’s Review
The Ohio State women’s track and field team turned in an impressive outdoor campaign in 2004 as three Buckeyes gained a spot on the All-America stand at the NCAA Championships, while the team claimed its third straight Top 4 finish in the Big Ten and a seventh-place standing at the Mideast regional.
The trio of All-Americans each had a hand in restructuring the outdoor record book. Leading the way was junior jumper Rosalind Goodwin, who bested both Ohio State standards in the long jump and triple jump on several occasions. Junior thrower Keturah Lofton set the Ohio State and Big Ten record in the hammer numerous times with the last coming at the NCAA championships. Lastly, junior thrower Amarachi Ukabam topped an OSU record to place third in the shot put at the Mideast regional.
On the track, senior Molly Logan gained her second berth to the NCAA championships in the 100-meter hurdles, while fellow senior Tamecia Brown established an OSU mark in the 800 meters.
The Buckeyes also defended their All-Ohio championship for the third straight season.
