Brown Takes Third in Hurdles at NCAA Track and Field Championships – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Day No. 3 of the NCAA Track and Field Outdoor National Championships saw three Buckeyes turn in oustanding performances at the University of Texas and its Mike A. Myers Stadium. Senior Joel Brown was the only Buckeye to compete in a final of an event, placing third and breaking his own OSU record in the men’s 110-meter hurdles. The women featured Amarachi Ukabam, who took sixth in the discus. In the team standings, the OSU men currently rank in a tie with Indiana and Florida State at 13th place with six team points. The women are knotted with several teams at 34th place with three points. Team standings are through event No. 42.
Brown (Baltimore, Md./ Woodlawn), who entered the NCAA meet with the top time in the country in the 110m hurdles at 13.45 set at the Mideast regional meet, snapped his own OSU record with a 13.43, which was good for third place behind Josh Walker of Oregon and his first-place time of 13.32. Brown’s performance, which counts as his third career All-Amarica honor, was his last for the Scarlet and Gray as he ends his career as the OSU record holder in the indoor 60-meter dash and 60-meter hurdles and the outdoor 110-meter hurdles and 200-meter dash.
Ukabam (Creve Couer, Mo./ Marquette), who missed the finals in the shot Thursday with a heave of 52-2, gained her third All-America honor in 2004 with a sixth-place finish in the discus, reaching 179 feet, 3 inches (54.64m). The sophomore gained All-American in the indoor shot put and weight in March.
Competing in her second prelim events in the last two days was Goodwin (Prospect, Ky./ Ballard), who failed to make the finals of the long jump Thursday. Friday, Goodwin, the OSU record holder in both the indoor and outdoor long and triple jumps, used a leap of 43 feet, 4 3/4 inches (43-7.75/ 13.21m) to take eighth-place in the qualifying round and gain a spot in the finals Saturday.
A host of Buckeyes compete in event finals Saturday. In the distance events, Rob Myers will chase a national crown in the 1,500 meters after a second-place prelim time, while Aaron Fisher will do the same in the 3,000-meter steeplechase after timing the top mark in the qualifier Thursday. Dan Taylor will throw in the finals of both the hammer and shot put, while Keturah Lofton will join Ukabam in the women’s side of the throws in the women’s hammer. Goodwin is set to compete in the triple jump final at 5:45 p.m. Saturday.
