COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s soccer team will host the Columbus Crew in the Third Annual Connor Senn Memorial Match next Wednesday, April 14, at 7 p.m. at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. All proceeds from the match will benefit the Connor Senn Memorial Scholarship Fund, which has raised over $35,000 to date.
“We greatly appreciate the support of the Columbus Crew in helping us stage this match in Connor’s memory and for the opportunity to continue to be a revenue stream for the Connor Senn Memorial Scholarship that has been established here at Ohio State,” John Bluem, Ohio State head men’s soccer coach, said.
Tickets for the event are $5 for adults and $3 for children. Youth teams, including two coaches, can purchase tickets for $2 each. Children 3 and under are free.
In last year’s match, Ohio State took a 1-0 lead on a goal by then-freshman Kevin Nugent before the Crew tied the game at 1-1 by halftime. The Major League Soccer squad then added two goals in the second half to win the match, 3-1.
“It is always a pleasure and a great opportunity for our players to measure themselves against the Columbus Crew, one of the finest professional soccer teams in America,” Bluem said.
“It is important to support Ohio State and their efforts in honoring Connor Senn,” Crew Head Coach Greg Andrulis said. “We are able to help OSU raise money for a great cause. Clearly the loss of a talented young athlete’s life is unfathomable and we are fortunate to be able to help in a positive way.”
The two previous Connor Senn Memorial Matches have raised more than $5,400 for the scholarship fund, which was started by Dr. Lance Senn, Connor’s father and a former member of the Ohio State tennis team, shortly after Connor collapsed during Ohio State’s match at Akron Sept. 26, 2001. Connor died that night from a congenital heart defect. A native of Granville, Ohio, Connor was a freshman walk-on defender who had earned a starting position midway through the 2001 season. He saw action in eight of 10 matches, starting five. The Connor Senn Memorial Scholarship Fund gives two $500 scholarships to one male and one female senior high school level soccer players. The scholarship winners will be announced during halftime of the match April 14.
The scholarship fund will become fully endowed once it reaches $100,000. Those wishing to make a contribution to the Connor Senn Memorial Scholarship Fund can do so by sending a check to Kristyn Carman, The Ohio State University, Gift Processing, The Fawcett Center, Room 709, 2400 Olentangy River Road, Columbus, OH 43210 (account #410775). Please include your name and return address so you may receive documentation of your charitable contribution from Ohio State for your tax records.
