COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State softball team scored one run in the second inning and another in the sixth and senior Kristi DeVries held Wisconsin to just three hits as the Buckeyes won game one of a double-header, 2-0, against the Badgers Sunday afternoon at Buckeye Field.
The shutout is the 23rd of DeVries’ career, which is just three shy of the record of 26 career shutouts held by Katie Chain from 2000-03.
“I thought Kristi (DeVries) threw an extraordinary game,” Linda Kalafatis, Ohio State head coach, said. “In her last three outings she has brought her A-game and we were able to give her some run support today.”
Ohio State (19-11, 2-1 Big Ten) took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when senior Beth McAbier (Carrollton, Ohio/Carrollton) walked, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a two-base throwing error by Minnesota pitcher Sara Gonzales off a grounder by freshman Christina Douglas (Mesa, Ariz./Dobson).
In the sixth inning, Ohio State freshman Megan Schwab (Glendale, Ariz./Sunrise Mountain) singled and later scored to put the Buckeyes up, 2-0. She advanced to second on a single by freshman Nycole Koyano (Walnut, Calif./Walnut), advanced to third on a walk by junior Karisa Evans (Franklin, Ohio/Franklin) and then scored on an RBI ground out by freshman Jamee Juarez (La Puente, Calif./Wilson). DeVries (Corona, Calif./Corona) retired 17 of the first 18 Minnesota batters of the game to improve to 7-6 on the season. She totaled eight strikeouts and did not allow a walk. Minnesota (19-11, 0-3 Big Ten) did not advance a runner past second base.
“The first thing you have to do on a day like this is get the weather out of your mind,” DeVries said, speaking about the cold and windy conditions in Columbus Sunday. “You have to work through it and make things happen. We came out ready to play today and battled our way to a win.”
McAbier and Koyano were both 1-for-2 in the game, while Schwab and junior Jennifer Johnson (La Mirada, Calif./La Mirada) were both 1-for-3.
Ohio State and Wisconsin will meet in game two of the double-header Sunday at approximately 2:30 p.m.
