Buckeyes Edge Penn State, 4-3, in Big Ten First Round – Ohio State Buckeyes

Columbus, Ohio – The No. 6 seed Ohio State women’s tennis team opened the Big Ten championship with a narrow first round victory over No. 11 seed Penn State, 4-3, Thursday at the Vandy Christie Outdoor Tennis Center in Evanston, Ill. Originally scheduled to begin at 11 a.m., the match was postponed until 4 p.m. because of rain and play had to be suspended and moved inside with the final three matches in progress. The Buckeyes (11-12, 5-5 Big Ten) advance to face No. 3 seed No. 20 ranked Illinois (17-4, 8-2 Big Ten) at 3 p.m. Thursday.
To begin the match, Ohio State won the doubles point by taking the Top 2 positions by 8-3 margins. At No. 1, senior duo Erica Fisk (Sr., Indianapolis, Ind./Pike) and Jackie Leskovar (Sr., Cambridge, Ontario/N.C. State) beat Megan Marton and Lee Ann Merryman while the tandem of Lindsay Williams (Sr., Beverly Hills, Mich./Birmingham Grove) and Meaghan Colville (Sr., Toronto, Ontario/Western Michigan), topped Sarah Spence and Maaria Husain at No. 2.
The singles competition was a back-and-forth affair decided by the final match. After Fisk staked the Buckeyes to a 2-0 lead with a straight-set victory over Marton, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 2, the Nittany Lions fought back to tie the match at 2-2. At that point, rain forced the action inside, where Lindsay Bryan (Jr., New Orleans, La./Ursuline Academy) put the Buckeyes back on top by defeating Katelyn Bevard, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 6. After Merryman downed Williams in three sets, 2-6, 7-6 (6), 6-4, at the No. 1 position, the match came down the No. 4 where Emily DeCamilla (Jr., Sacramento, Calif./Maryland) earned the clinching victory in three sets over Spence, 6-1, 4-6, 7-5.
Next up, the Buckeyes continue play at the Big Ten championship with a second round match with No. 3 seed Illinois at 3 p.m. Friday.
