COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State track and field team finished the 110th running of the Penn Relay Carnival Saturday at the University of Pennsylvania’s Franklin Field in Philadelphia. Senior thrower Dan Taylor, the reigning Male Athlete of the Penn Relays award winner, took top honors in the men’s hammer Saturday with a heave of 221 feet, 2 inches (221-2). On the track, All-American Joel Brown clocked a 13.60 to win the championships of America 110-meter hurdles.
Taylor, who defended his 2003 championships of America Penn Relays title in the shot put Friday with a throw of 66-7.75, is the first male athlete to win both the hammer and the shot put in the history of the Penn Relays. On Friday, Taylor claimed third in the discus, topping 176 feet.
The 13.60 in the hurdles served as a season best for Brown and fell just .02 shy of his Ohio State record of 13.58 in the event. Brown finished fourth in the event last season, clocking a 13.76. Also in the hurdles, fellow senior Molly Logan placed eighth on the women’s side of the championships of America with a 13.61 in the 100-meter hurdles.
The relay events saw the men claim seventh in the 4×800-meter championships of America event, while the 4×400 men took fifth in the college division. Senior Rob Myers and juniors Brian Olinger, Aaron Fisher and Jacob McCauley combined to clock a time of 16:38.95 in the 4x800m. On Thursday, Olinger placed second in the steeplechase, while Fisher, McCauley and Myers helped Ohio State to another seventh-place finish in the men’s distance medley Friday night. In the 4x400m event, Brown combined with junior John Morris and freshmen James Baisden and Gerald Griffin to land fifth place in a season-best time of 3:12.02.
