Ohio State Finishes Second Day at Penn Relays – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State track and field team competed in second-day action at the 110th annual Penn Relay Carnival Friday at the University of Pennsylvania’s Franklin Field in Philadelphia. Ohio State senior thrower Dan Taylor defended his 2003 championship of America shot put championship and placed third in the discus. Senior hurdlers Joel Brown and Molly Logan advanced the finals in their respective events. Logan also helped the women’s sprint medley place fourth in the championships of America division.
Taylor (Middlefield, Ohio/ Berkshire) landed a season-best throw of 66 feet, 7 l inches (66-7.75) to claim his second career Penn Relays shot championship. Later Friday, Taylor, the 2003 Male Athlete of the Penn Relays, competed in the discus championships of America and took third place with a heave of 176-10. Also in the throws, sophomore Amarachi Ukabam (Creve Couer, Mo./ Marquette), who placed 12th in the shot put Thursday evening, took fourth place with a 165-1 in the women’s discus championships of America.
Senior hurdlers Molly Logan (Philadelphia, Pa./ Penn Wood) and Joel Brown (Baltimore, Md./ Woodlawn) highlighted Ohio State on the track as the pair advanced to the finals in the 100-meter and 110-meter hurdles events. Logan timed a 13.27 to take second in her heat and advance to the finals Saturday at 3:15 p.m. Brown also advanced on the men’s side in the 110m with a 13.66 to win heat No. 2 and advance to the finals Saturday at 3:25 p.m. Later, Logan and fellow seniors Brandi Hogan and Tamecia Brown, along with freshman Jenna Harris, claimed fourth place in the women’s sprint medley championships of America in a time of 3:53.50. Other Top 5 scores in the championships of America were turned in by junior jumper Rosalind Goodwin (Prospect, Ky./ Ballard), who posted a fourth-place standing in the women’s triple jump championships of America with a leap of 41-10, while fellow triple jumper Shayla Moore (Jessup, Md./ Long Beach) placed ninth at 40-5.50. On the men’s side seniors Billy Mills (Fairlawn, Ohio/ Copley) and Nosa Ehimwenman (Homewood, Ill./ Flossmoor) posted Top 20 finishes in the high jump and long jump collegiate events.
Ohio State also was well represented in the men’s distance medley championships of America as the foursome of senior and Rob Myers (Rushville, Ohio/ Fairfield Union) and juniors Aaron Fisher (Indianapolis, Ind./ Franklin), Jacob McCauley (Enon, Ohio/ Greenon) and John Morris (Camden, N.J./ Camden), who timed a season-best 47.50 in the 400-meter leg, combined to time a 9:48.95 and take seventh place.
Day two also featured the Ohio State men’s sprint relays squads as the 4×100-meter relay team narrowly missed their season-best mark of 41.52 set last week at the All-Ohio Championships, failing to advance to the finals with a 41.65 in the preliminary heats. Later, the Buckeyes posted a Top 15 time in the men’s 4×400-meter relay, setting a season best at 3:12.29.
The final day of the Penn Relays gets underway Saturday morning at 7 a.m. with men’s and women’s racewalks. The college participants step in at 9:10 a.m. with the men’s 400-meter hurdles.
