Columbus, Ohio – The Ohio State track and field team helped celebrate the opening events of the 110th running of the Penn Relay Carnival Thursday on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. The event, which has served as one of the largest meets in the country since its inception in 1895, started Thursday morning with the women’s 400-meter hurdles college open and will run through Saturday evening at Penn’s Franklin Field.
The events held Thursday featured preliminary heats of the running events and finals in the distance and women’s throws competitions. Junior Brian Olinger scored the top mark for the Buckeyes with a career -best 8:50.02 to take runner-up in the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase championships of America. Olinger’s time serves as a NCAA Mideast Regional qualifier and tops the Ohio State season’s best chart for 2004.
In the field events, junior Rosalind Goodwin, who established an Ohio State record in the long jump last week, placed fourth in the women’s championship of America with a leap covering 19 feet, 8 L inches (19-8.25). Also contributing in the jumps was freshman Jessie Stringer, who claimed 12th place in the women’s high jump with a clearing height of 5-5.75. Senior Becky Heintz equaled her season best in the pole vault at a measure of 11-3.75 to take 18th in the college division.
Another junior, Tiffany Davis, led the Buckeyes in the throws events as she reached 184-5 in the women’s hammer collegiate division for fifth place.
