COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State track and field teams wrapped up action at the 2004 All-Ohio Track and Field Championships Saturday in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. In its first team-scoring meet of the season, the women’s team defended its 2003 All-Ohio crown with 158.5 points. The OSU men, minus All-American thrower Dan Taylor and the bulk of the men’s distance team which competed at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif., completed the day with 89.0 points to place fifth behind winner Cincinnati and its 215.50 points.
Junior Rosalind Goodwin proved to be the headliner for the Buckeyes Saturday as she established the all-time OSU record in the women’s long jump with a bound of 20 feet, 11 l inches (20-11.75). Goodwin, who set the Ohio State indoor records in both the long and triple jumps this season, eclipsed the mark of 20-11.25 set by former Buckeye Theresa Diggs in 1988. The 2004 indoor Big Ten champion also claimed top honors in the triple jump with a season mark of 42-8, which stands fourth all-time at Ohio State. Fellow Buckeye junior Shayla Moore added team points with a runner-up 42-6.25 in the triple and a third-place leap of 19-2 in the long jump. Moore’s effort in the triple jump ranks fifth all-time at OSU and serves as a qualifier to the Mideast regionals.
The men’s jump events also featured season-bests from senior Nosa Ehimwenman in the long and triple jump with leaps of 23-8 and 48-3.25, respectively. Ehimwenman’s marks led the 2001 Big Ten champion to a first-place finish in the triple jump and a No. 4 finish in the long jump. Another pair of seniors combined to turn in top marks on both sides of the pole vault as Becky Heintz took fifth at a height of 11-3.75, while Seth MacCarter placed sixth at 15-5. Youth served the Buckeyes as well as freshman Jesse Stringer, an All-Big Ten performer indoors, staked to fourth place in the women’s high jump at an outdoor best 5-6.
Following a first-place finish in the hammer by Ohio State junior Keturah Lofton Friday night, fellow thrower Amarachi Ukabam, a sophomore, claimed the top spot in the women’s discus with a heave of 173-3 and the women’s shot put at 48-8.75. Ukabam bested Lofton in both events Saturday, with Lofton taking a third-place finish of 155-10 in the discus and a fifth-place score in the shot put at 44-9.50. Ukabam’s throws earned a spot as a regional qualifier in both events.
Senior Molly Logan added 10 team points for Ohio State with her winning time of 13:06 in the women’s 100-meter hurdles. The wind-aided figure served as a season and personal best for Logan as she reached a qualifying mark for the Mideast regionals for the third-straight week. Freshman Jennifer Ogbuehi added another first-place finish in the women’s 400-meter hurdles in a season-best time of 1:01.00.
Also on the track, Ohio State’s 4×100-meter relay team, anchored by freshman Jenna Harris and fueled by Logan in the third leg, placed first in a season-best time of 46:03. The men’s 4x100m used a strong first leg by junior Greg Norman to place among the leaders with a runner-up effort of 42.27. Harris also provided individual points with a runner-up in the 200 meters in a season-best 24.02 and a fifth-place tally in the women’s 100-meter dash at 11.92, while Norman posted a wind-aided season-best 10.62 in the 100m.
Junior sprinter John Morris also clocked a season-best 48.00 to claim top honors in the men’s 400-meter dash and set a personal-best with a 21.75 to take fourth in the 200 meters. Ohio State wrapped up the sprints with a second-place and season-best time of 3:44.43 to place runner-up in the women’s 4×400-meter relay. The men also claimed second in the 4×400 as Morris anchored the unit to another season-best 3:13.02.
Ohio State was helped in the distance events by freshman Melanie Price, who scored a second-place time of 4:38.08 in the women’s 1,500-meter run. Also scoring a top mark in a distance event was freshman Brittney Zellner, who took fourth in the women’s 5,000 meters in season-best 19:09.34.
The men’s decathlon also finished Saturday with junior Scott Hudepohl representing Ohio State with 6,222 cumulative points, good for fourth-place and a personal best. Hudepohl used Top 5 finishes in the 100-meter dash, long jump, high jump and 400-meter dash Friday and Top 5 places in the pole vault and 1,500m Saturday to assure fourth place.
