DAYTON, Ohio – The Ohio State softball team opened play in the University of Dayton Flyer Invitational Saturday morning with a 9-1 win over host Dayton at Stuart Field. A total of 10 Buckeyes produced at least one base hit as Ohio State (6-6) set season-highs for runs scored and hits (12) in the six-inning mercy rule win.
After Dayton scored their lone run in the top of the first inning, Ohio State freshman Jamee Juarez (La Puente, Calif./Wilson) smacked a two-run double to give the Buckeyes the lead they would not relinquish. Juarez and senior Kristi DeVries (Corona, Calif./Corona) added one RBI each during Ohio State’s three-run third inning before junior Ashley Cutcliff (Zionsville, Ind./University of Florida) blasted a two-run homerun in the fifth inning to put the Buckeyes up, 8-1. Freshman Christina Douglas (Mesa, Ariz./Dobson) doubled in the sixth inning and later scored on a Dayton error to give Ohio State a game-ending eight-run lead.
Juarez pitched the first four innings and struck out seven Dayton hitters to improve to 5-2 on the season. Sophomore Andrea Tribuzi (Plano, Texas/Plano East) worked the final two innings in her first appearance of the season, striking out four without allowing a hit.
DeVries and freshman Nycole Koyano (Walnut, Calif./Walnut) recorded two hits each, all singles, while four Buckeyes all contributed one double, including junior Karisa Evans (Franklin, Ohio/Franklin), senior Beth McAbier (Carrollton, Ohio/Carrollton), Juarez and Douglas.
Dayton’s Angie Barney went 2-for-3 to lead the Flyers.
Ohio State will continue play in the tournament Saturday afternoon against Wright State University.
