COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State Track and Field team concluded its spring trip in Tempe, Ariz. Friday in the Arizona State Invitational. The field events highlighted the team performance at ASU’s Sun Angel Stadium as Buckeyes claimed top honors in five events. Leading the way was two-time indoor NCAA champion Dan Taylor, who broke his own Ohio State record in the discus and posted top marks in the hammer and shot put. Friday also marked the return of All-American hurdler Joel Brown, who paced the running events with a winning time in the 110-meter hurdles.
Taylor opened the day with a record-setting throw of 222 feet, 5 inches (222-5) to take third in the discus behind two unattached competitors. Later, Taylor grabbed first-place honors in both the hammer and shot put as he reached 65-8.75 in the shot and 185-0 in the discus. Taylor holds the OSU record in the discus as well at 193-7. The third-place finish by Taylor in the hammer is the first event in 20 combined indoor and outdoor throw competitions that Taylor did not place first. All three marks qualified Taylor for the 2004 NCAA Mideast Regional in Baton Rouge, La. May 28-29.
The field events were fueled on the women’s side by senior pole vaulter Becky Heintz, junior jumpers Rosalind Goodwin and Shayla Moore, junior thrower Keturah Lofton and sophomore thrower Amarachi Ukabam, who all recorded Top 3 efforts in their respective events. Goodwin, Lofton, Moore and Ukabam each posted regional qualifiers.
Goodwin, who placed first in six straight long jump competitions to end the indoor regular season, continued her tear with a 19-11.75 to add her first outdoor top honor in the event. Fellow jumper, Moore, bested the field in the triple jump with a leap of 41-0.50.
In the throws, Lofton and Ukabam combined to turn in Top 3 marks in each of the hammer, discus and shot put competitions. Ukabam took first in the shot put with a career best 51-8.50 and added a second-place measure of 178-0 in the discus. Lofton, who joined Ukabam as an All-American in the indoor season, placed third in both the hammer (186-0) and shot put (46-2.75).
Heintz combined with senior Seth MacCarter to round out the field events as each took runner-up marks in the pole vault. MacCarter reached 15-7, while Heintz cleared 11-3.75.
Joel Brown’s return highlighted the running events as he turned in a 13.98 to best the field in the 110-meter hurdles. Also returning to competition in the outdoor season was fellow senior hurdler Molly Logan, who timed a 13.91 in the women’s 100-meter hurdles for second place. A third senior hurdler, Brandi Hogan, added a fourth-place mark (14.64) in the 100m hurdles. The times for Brown and Logan served as regional qualifiers.
Another senior helped to pace the Ohio State distance runners as Tamecia Brown, who turned in the second best time in school history in the 800 meters last week, clocked a 4:35.21 to take first in the 1,500 meters. Youth also served the Buckeyes in the sprint events as freshman Jenna Harris turned in third and fourth-place times in the 100 and 200-meter dashes. Harris timed a 24.45 to take third in the 200m and a 12.10 to claim fourth in the 100m.
The men’s 4×400-meter relay squad added another runner-up time with a 3:15.16.
Ohio State heads back to Columbus for the outdoor home opener next week at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The Buckeyes will welcome competing teams to the 2004 Ohio State Relays Saturday beginning at 10 a.m.
