FRESNO, Calif. – Ohio State senior Kristi DeVries struck out nine Fresno State batters and allowed just four hits, but the 15th-ranked Bulldogs shut out the Buckeyes, 1-0, in front of 1,691 fans in the first game of a double-header in Fresno, Calif., Friday night. The Buckeyes fall to 2-2 on their spring break trip and 17-9 overall.
DeVries (Corona, Calif./Corona) has struck out at least nine batters in five different games this season and now has 74 strikeouts for the season, but saw her record slip to 6-5 on the season with the loss to Fresno State (26-12), which rebounds after dropping a double-header to No. 13 Stanford Wednesday.
Ohio State got its first hit of the game in the fifth inning when junior Natalie Hales (Canton, Ohio/Eastern Michigan) knocked a single to right field. In the sixth inning, freshman Megan Schwab (Glendale, Ariz./Sunrise Mountain) singled to left field with one out, but she would be the last Buckeye base runner of the game.
Fresno State’s Jamie Southern, a two-time All-American, struck out nine batters and allowed just four Ohio State base runners to improve to 18-5 in the circle. Southern also scored the Bulldog’s run as she walked in the first inning and scored following two FSU singles.
Ohio State and Fresno State will meet again Friday night in game two of the double-header at approximately 8:15 p.m. PST (11:15 p.m. EST).
