Weatherill’s Six Goals Powers No. 18 Women’s Lacrosse To A 14-11 Victory Over Cornell – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 18th-ranked Ohio State (3-3 overall) women’s lacrosse team used a six-goal output by Caroline Weatherill (Sr., Malvern, Pa.) to put away Cornell (1-5), 14-11, Tuesday afternoon in a game played at the Vanderbilt Lacrosse Complex in Nashville, Tenn. Weatherill broke a three-all tie with three straight goals to put the Buckeyes ahead for good. OSU’s Amy Tulk (Sr., West Chester, Pa.), Regina Oliver (Jr., Pottstown, Pa.) and Ashley Evans (Jr., Ellicott City, Md.) each added two goals in the win. Cornell’s Jaime Quinn had a team-high three goals for the Big Red with Lindsay Steinberg and Kristen Smith adding two goals apiece.
Cornell opened the scoring with a Quinn goal at 1:47 gone in the half on an assist by Allison Schindler. OSU’s Evans responded to tie the score at 3:16. The Big Red came back quickly with a Smith goal at 3:40 on an assist from Quinn. The Buckeyes tied the game at 4:20 with a KC Carter (So., Birchrunville, Pa.) goal assisted by Oliver. Quinn’s second goal gave Cornell a 3-2 lead at 4:53 off Schindler’s second assist. OSU’s Oliver tied the game at three with an unassisted goal at 6:04. Buckeye Weatherill put Ohio State ahead for good with a free position goal at 8:41. She followed that with unassisted goals at 10:55 and 13:06 to give Ohio State a 6-3 lead. Smith’s second goal cut the lead to 6-4 at 14:02. A second goal by Evans at 17:15 took the lead to 7-4. Cornell’s Kate Hirschfield cut the OSU lead to two (7-5) with a score at 18:26. Weatherill’s fourth goal, assisted by Andrea Fischer (So., Cleveland Heights, Ohio), returned the lead to three at 8-5. The Buckeyes then posted scores by Tulk and 23:43 and by Noemi Hites (Sr., Pleasanton, Calif.), assisted by Oliver, at 29:20 to half a 10-5 halftime lead.
Cornell came out strong in the second half with the first three goals. Schindler scored on a free position attempt and goals by Quinn (34:50) and Lindsay Steinberg (39:01) cut the Buckeye lead to two at 10-8. Weatherill’s fifth goal at 40:17 took the lead to 11-8. Katherine Butler cut the lead to 11-9 for Cornell at 42:55. Ohio State made it 12-9 with Weatherill’s sixth goal at 47:22 with an assist from Tulk. Tulk then scored at 47:39 to make it 13-9, OSU. Steinberg, with an assist from Lindsey Moore, cut the margin to three, 13-10, at 53:04. OSU’s Oliver collected her second goal of the game at 57:10 to make it 14-10. Cornell’s Lyndsay Robinson, with a Schindler’s assist, scored at 58:22 to end the scoring, giving Ohio State at 14-11 victory.
Buckeye Kim Hastings (So., Sewickley, Pa.) earned the win in goal playing 51 minutes. She had 14 saves in giving up eight goals. Taryn Bowen (Sr., Columbus, Ohio) closed out the game for OSU playing the final nine minutes and giving up three goals. Cornell’s Maggie Fava played the entire game in goal making seven saves.
OSU now travels to the University of North Carolina (4-3) to face the 14th-ranked Tar Heels, at 7 p.m., Friday, March 26 in the first day of the Aeropostale Women’s Lacrosse Challenge. The Buckeyes will then face No. 8 Maryland (5-2) at 1 p.m., Sunday, March 28 in the second day of the Challenge.
