MORAGA, Calif. – Ohio State senior Kristi DeVries tossed a one-hit shutout Tuesday evening as the Buckeye softball team wrapped up a double-header sweep of Saint Mary’s College with a 1-0 victory over the Gaels in game two in Moraga, Calif. DeVries racked up 10 strikeouts and retired the last 13 consecutive Saint Mary’s batters of the game as Ohio State won their first two games this week on the West Coast.
DeVries’ dominance was timely as the Buckeyes were held to one run in the contest after topping Saint Mary’s 7-4 in the opener.
“I don’t think we came out with our best game, but we found a way to pull it off,” DeVries (Corona, Calif./Corona) said. “We got the job done but we know we can do better.”
Ohio State (17-7) collected nine hits in the game and won for the 12th time in its last 13 games.
After beginning the season 0-3, DeVries has won her last six consecutive starts to improve to 6-3 on the season. In her six victories, DeVries has collected 54 strikeouts.
The Buckeyes scored their lone run with two outs in the third inning as freshman Nycole Koyano (Walnut, Calif./Walnut) singled and then scored on an RBI triple by junior Karisa Evans (Franklin, Ohio/Franklin). Evans was a perfect 3-for-3 in the game with a pair of singles to go along with her first triple of the season.
“Karisa’s RBI triple started it and that gave us the edge,” DeVries said. “It came down to the last batter and every pitch counted.”
Freshman Jamee Juarez (La Puente, Calif./Wilson) went 2-for-3 at the plate for Ohio State.
Ohio State will return to action Wednesday at 2 p.m. at No. 13 Pacific.
