Ohio State swimmer Gulsah Gunenc set the Turkish national record in the 200-meter butterfly Saturday at the 2004 Indiana Open Invitational in Bloomington, Ind. Gunenc’s times in yards to converted short-course meters in the butterfly event were season-best times and placed Gunenc in 37th place, respectively, to qualify for the 2004 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships, March 18-20, in College Station, Texas.
Gunenc, a freshman from Edirne, Turkey (Edirne Anatolian), set the Turkish national record with her time of 2:13.98 in the 200-meter butterfly, improving her previous lifetime-best time by more than two seconds. When converted from short-course meters to yards, Gunenc’s time of 2:00.05 is the season-best time for the Buckeyes.
“Gulsah was really relaxed this weekend,” Jeanne Fleck, Ohio State women’s head swimming coach, said. “She got to swim for herself and really did great.”
Earlier this year, Gunenc swam the 50-meter butterfly in a time of 28.91 and the 100-meter butterfly in a time of 1:02.27, both new Turkish national swimming records. Gunenc will swim for her native Turkey at the 2004 Olympic Games, Aug. 13-29, in Athens, Greece.
