COLUMBUS, Ohio – Junior Meghan Rowlands blasted a two-run homerun in the seventh inning to cap off a historic game at Buckeye Field Friday as the Ohio State softball team beat Robert Morris, 8-1, in the first home night game in program history. The Buckeyes improve to 2-0 at home this season as day one of the Buckeye Invitational came to a close.
“The first home games are always great, but to have two good wins today makes it even better,” Rowlands (Hilliard, Ohio/Bishop Ready) said. “I think we’re starting a new tradition here with having the lights on. It made the atmosphere that much more exciting and it was nice to keep scoring runs the way we did in the second game (vs. Robert Morris).”
Ohio State (14-7) scored a pair of runs in four separate innings to win for the ninth time in its last 10 games and remain undefeated at 15-0 all-time in the Buckeye Invitational. Robert Morris falls to 1-17.
Freshman Christina Douglas (Mesa, Ariz./Dobson) knocked a two-run double in the fourth inning to put the Buckeyes comfortably ahead as freshman Jamee Juarez (La Puente, Calif./Wilson) picked up momentum on the mound. She struck out five hitters, scattered four hits and allowed just one unearned run in picking up her seventh win of the season.
“We had a lot of good contributions tonight,” Linda Kalafatis, Ohio State head coach, said. “Meghan (Rowlands’) homerun was a thrill and Christina (Douglas) and Billie Jo (Carder) had nice games. It was also the first time Jamee (Juarez) and (catcher) Stacy (Hibma) got to work together, so it was nice to put some people in certain spots. We want to be as prepared as possible when the Big Ten season arrives.”
Freshman Megan Schwab (Glendale, Ariz./Sunrise Mountain) went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles, while Juarez smacked an RBI triple. Freshman Nycole Koyano (Walnut, Calif./Walnut) and junior Ashley Cutcliff (Zionsville, Ind./University of Florida) both provided RBI singles in the first inning.
The Buckeye Invitational continues Saturday with a five-game schedule beginning at 11 a.m. Ohio State will take on Northern Illinois at 7 p.m. in the final contest of the day.
