COLUMBUS, Ohio – Junior jumper Rosalind Goodwin and sophomore thrower Amarachi Ukabam represented the Ohio State women’s track and field team Saturday at the 2004 NCAA Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, Ark. In the second day of the event, held at the University of Arkansas’ Randall Tyson Track Center, Goodwin and Ukabam earned All-America honors in the triple jump and shot put events, respectively.
Ukabam, who placed 11th in the weight throw Friday evening for her first All-America honor, posted a personal best mark of 54 feet, 11 L inches (54-11.25/ 16.74m) to place within the Top 10 in the women’s shot put. In what was considered one the best women’s shot put championships in many years, Ukabam claimed All-American with a ninth-place measure, besting Rebekah Green of Kansas State, who threw 54-4.50. Laura Gerraughty of North Carolina won the event as she exceeded 62 feet. Ukabam, a native of Creve Couer, Mo., is the first Buckeye woman to gain All-America status in two events since Donnica Merriman in 2000 and the fifth OSU thrower all-time to earn the honor in the shot put.
Ukabam’s performance in the shot put was the fifth All-American performance in the throw events by Ohio State at the event as junior Keturah Lofton (Zainesville, Ohio/ Zainesville) joined Ukabam as an All-American in the weight Friday, while Dan Taylor (Middlefield, Ohio/ Berkshire) won both the shot put and weight throw in the men’s competition to become the first male in NCAA history to win both events at the national indoor meet.
Goodwin, who just missed All-American in the long jump Friday night with a leap of 19-8 for 12th place, took the runway for the triple jump Saturday and gained the Buckeyes’ sixth All-America honor in the competition as she once again placed 12th with leap of 42-0.50. Goodwin, who hails from Prospect, Ky., is the first Buckeye to receive All-America honors in the triple jump since former Buckeye Tameika Porter achieved the feat in 1998.
