COLUMBUS, Ohio – The seventh-ranked Ohio State (22-2 overall, 12-2 Big Ten) women’s volleyball team dropped into a tie with Penn State (21-2, 12-2) for first place in the Big Ten Conference with a 3-1 (30-19, 32-30, 21-30, 30-28) loss at fifth-ranked Minnesota (22-4, 11-3) Saturday. Ohio State’s Stacey Gordon (Sr., Oshawa, Ontario) scored a match-high 28 points for the Buckeyes with Danielle Meyer (Fr., Cincinnati, Ohio) adding 16.5 points and Briana McCarthy (So., Beaver Dam, Wis.) 12.5 points. Gordon had a match-high 27 kills with two assist blocks in the match. Her 27 kills marked her 100th consecutive match with double-figure kills. OSU’s Meyer had 14 kills, a solo block and four assist blocks with McCarthy adding 11 kill and three assist blocks. For Minnesota, Erin Martin had a team-high 24.5 points for the Gophers with Meredith Nelson adding 18.5 and Trisha Bratford 18. Martin scored a team-high 19 kills and added five solo and one assist block. Nelson had 15 kills, one ace serve and five assist blocks with Bratford adding 14 kills, one ace serve and three solo blocks.
Minnesota hit .405 in game one to Ohio State’s .116, winning the game, 30-19.
Game two saw 10 ties and seven lead changes. Ohio State tied the game at eight with a Marisa Main (So., Louisville, Ky.) kill and took a 10-8 lead off two Minnesota errors. Tied at 10, two kills from Meyer and two Gopher errors put OSU ahead, 14-10. The Buckeyes, leading 27-24, saw Minnesota tie the game at 27 with two kills from Bratford and one from Jessica Byrnes. Three Minnesota game points were stopped before Nelson’s kill ended the game at 32-30. Minnesota hit .237 to .179 for Ohio State. Ohio State took control of game three with a McCarthy kill and a Gopher error to open a 2-0 lead. The Buckeyes never trailed, winning the game 30-21 with a kill by Ami Stevens (Fr., Centerburg, Ohio). Ohio State hit .500 for the game to .209 for Minnesota.
Game four had 14 ties and five lead changes. The game came down to a 28-all tie. Bratford’s kill set match point at 29-28 and her ace serve ended the game at 30-28, and the match, 3-1 to Minnesota.
For the match, Ohio State had a 76-69 advantage in kills while Minnesota out hit Ohio State, .254 to .226. The Gophers had a 3-0 margin in ace serves and gave up eight service errors to six for the Buckeyes. The Gophers had an 82-79 margin in digs with UM’s Paula Gentil recording a match-high 28. At the net, Minnesota had a 15-8 advantage in team blocks with Martin collecting a match-high six blocks with five solos and one assist. Ohio State’s Main had a match-high 60 assists with Minnesota’s Lindsey Taatjes recording 34 and Kelly Bowman 29.
Ohio State returns home next weekend to host Northwestern Friday, Nov. 12 and Wisconsin Saturday, Nov. 13 in St. John Arena.
