COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s swimming and diving team will continue its 2004-05 season against Cincinnati Saturday at 5 p.m. at the Mike Peppe Aquatic Center.
LAST TIME OUT FOR OHIO STATE
The Ohio State women’s swimming and diving team opened the season with a 206.50-93.50 victory over Bowling Green Oct. 28. The Buckeyes placed first in every event of the meet.
The team had many multiple winners. Nicole Maglich won the 100- and 1,000-yard freestyle and had the fastest split time in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Rebekah Rychvalsky won the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke. Also winning in two events was Linda Lund taking the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard butterfly, and Griet Buelens taking the 200- and 500-yard freestyle events.
Gulsah Gunenc won the 200-yard butterfly in a close race that came down to the touch. Katie Kolles, Stephanie Fennell, and Samantha Johnson were other winners of the night.
The diving squad also made a strong showing, sweeping both the 1-meter and the 3-meter events. Ashley Bourland won the 1-meter event with a score of 249.60. Anesa Beard won the 3-meter event with a score of 268.65.
A LOOK AT THE BEARCATS
The Cincinnati Bearcats bring an 0-2 record with them to Columbus for the meet against the Buckeyes. The Bearcats lost to Western Kentucky 127-96 last Saturday. Elyse Perez took first in two events, the 500- and 1,000-yard freestyle, leading the team. Head coach Monty Hopkins is in his 15th season at Cincinnati.
LAST TIME VS. THE BEARCATS
The last time the Buckeyes competed against the Bearcats was Nov. 5, 1999 in Cincinnati’s home pool. The Buckeyes fell to the Bearcats 171-127. The Buckeyes did have four winning events, with former Buckeye Heidi Hazen winning in two events, Jericho Strausbaugh taking the 200-yard breaststroke and diver Holly Underwood winning the 3-meter event.
SCARLET VS. GRAY MEET
The annual Scarlet and Gray exhibition meet was held Oct. 22. The Scarlet team managed to have two swimmers win numerous events. Nicole Maglich won placed first in the 200-, 500-, and 1,000-yard freestyle events. Linda Lund won two events, the 50- and the 100-yard freestyle.
COACH Jeanne Fleck
Head women’s swimming coach Jeanne Fleck is in her sixth season at the helm of the Ohio State women’s swimming program. She has become accustomed to her teams displaying excellence in the water and in the classroom throughout her coaching career. Fleck has geared the Buckeyes to one school record and two pool records while getting her student-athletes to set personal bests almost every week. The Buckeyes had the highest grade point average in the Big Ten conference and was ranked ninth in the country during fall quarter last year. In five seasons, Fleck has had 25 Academic All-Big Ten selections and 57 OSU Scholar-Athletes.
ABOUT COACH PANZANO
Vince Panzano is in his 27th year as coach of the Ohio State men’s and women’s diving teams. Panzano, who was named the 2004 Big Ten Diving Coach of the Year for the eighth time in his career, has produced one world champion, one junior world champion, two Olympic medalists, 22 U.S. Diving champions, 10 NCAA champions, 14 NCAA runners-up, 43 Big Ten champions and 66 NCAA All-Americans.

The Buckeyes will travel to the University of Michigan to compete against the Wolverines at 5 p.m., Nov. 12. The Buckeyes then return to Columbus to host Miami (Ohio) Nov. 13 at 1 p.m. at the Mike Peppe Aquatic Center.
